In a post earlier this month, we mentioned how, in our last apartment, we had a comfy chair tucked in the corner of our kitchen. While unconventional, we always loved sitting there, sipping wine, while our roommate made dinner...
But when we were actually looking for a pic of this tip in action, we couldn't find an example. And then yesterday, we stumbled upon Kristy's comfy chair in the kitchen. Kristy mentioned that her kitchen was already a homey place where "the kettle's always on and there are biscuits in the cupboard." But she felt that the room needed an extra layer of coziness where one could read a magazine and have a brew. So when she spotted this Edwardian armchair at a thrift store, she snatched it up. She says that initially, her husband didn't like the idea of having a cozy chair in the kitchen (but now it's his favorite spot--that is, if he can beat the dog to it).

Love it!
Love this very English kitchen too -- the cabinetry, the stone floor, the Dualit toaster and the scale... and of course, the very hairy dog and the cat.

The cats love it a little too much, I have to vacuum it a lot. I love it tho.

I like this idea, but woudn't the upholstery absorb all kinds of smells? I can just imagine the chair on a hot summer day - releasing the ghosts of onions, salmon, and garlic long since passed.

I love it. I wish I had room for one (or two!).

@ Modfan--When we had our comfy chair in the kitchen, I never noticed the chair absorbing any of the kitchen odors.

This is where I would sit and pontificate while my friends cooked. Cute cat and dog would be in my lap. Good times.

When I was at university, we (five women) rented a beautiful early 20th century house. It had a HUGE kitchen. We put a lovely couch in it. We loved it. The couch was inevitably the place to hang out during parties and early morning coffee sessions. If I had the room now, I would put in something similar.
I think good design enables you to create wonderful experiences with family and friends. Our couch certainly did that.

It looks so out of place.....but I love the idea. I am going to try it, once i find the right chair, so that i can be sure to get as comfortable as that dog looks.

in my mother's kitchen, the heart and hearth of the home, we have a rocking chair and a comfy leather chair separating the kitchen area from the breakfast table. i grew up sitting in those chairs watching my mom cook, with the back door open to the porch...and every time i go home now, we cook together and then enjoy a glass of wine while our goodies are in the oven. when i have the space in a home of my own, i'll do the same! i think it encourages family interaction in my favorite room of any house.

Wouldn't a chair like that be at high risk of stains from spilled food?
If I were going to put a comfy chair in my kitchen, it would be my director's chair. If someone spilled piccata sauce on that, at least I could wipe off the wood frame and toss the canvas in the laundry.

my wife and i are moving into a new home and we've talked about putting a comfy chair or loveseat into the breakfast nook area of the kitchen. i've been a little resistant, but seeing how cozy the dog looks in the kitchen, i'm thinking we'll do this, we'll love it and our dog will really love it.

The chair at the dining end of our kitchen so well away from food prep and cooking. The upholstery is actually very easy to clean.Especially when it's been stain protected. We will have it re-upholstered eventually, when the puppy is a bit older, but will stick to the velvet/chenille.
Anyone who visits makes a bee-line to the chair! In fact my friend calls it her happy place.
Thanks for all your comments I love hearing other people's views.
