Flickr Finds: DIY Hallrunner from Carpet Samples

atla-040208-carpetsamples01.jpgWe’ve blogged having a made from carpet remnants. How about a rug made of carpet samples? Got a morning to get creative? Do what this creative Flickr decorator did...

This hallway runner, put together in a few hours in a quiet morning, is made of carpet samples and duct tape. You might want to go a little more durable, and have it stitched to a backing and bound, but we think it’s pretty cool as is.

Great idea, however this execution of the concept looks incomplete. An area rug for a room would be a bolder statement.

This would be a fun look, for about 5 minutes. Then I would want something more unified, and calming.

I have a few rugs I made from carpet samples.
a friend of mine came across a bunch of OLD carpet samples. mostly shag.. Mine have tight color-schemes.
perhapse i'll post them sometime.

one is about 5'x7' the other is a runner similar to this one.. 2.5'x8'.

AND.. duct tape works great. ive had mine duct taped together for almost two years.. I've only had to re-tape small areas once or twice from foot traffic/ my cat being crazy.

This is the same concept as Flor of course, only a with an element of funk. Sometimes carpet stores have a bin of samples or cuttings they'll give you for free -- another option.

I started to think you could do this by buying inexpensive ikea mats, and then realized you may as well buy Flor tiles. To be worthwhile as a cost-savings approach, I think this has to be done with found carpet pieces.

Duct tape's worthless here. Use double sided carpet tape, and then you don't have to worry about the rug skidding around. No, you don't tape it to the floor.
While this is a time honored trick, it's still ugly.

The asymmetry is too much for me. Rugs are so pricey that I always think of them as luxury pieces - and this patchwork business, while creative and possibly cost-effective, takes away the glamour.

I like it; funky and functional. I'd probably make it a rectangular shape instead of jagged edges, but overall, very cool.

love this! in the flickr stream it's a landing pad for the baby :) I've been thinking of doing this for the kids' room. so the trick is just to hound carpet stores and ask for free samples?

arza, maybe you're thinking about the post about the DIY rug made out of FLOR samples?

I think this is great and I like that it's asymmetrical.

I don't think I'd do this with carpet samples, but there are some rugs available from Ikea that can be combined, (carpet taped together) into very attractive area rugs.
