Mini-Inspiration: Vitra Museum’s Miniature Chair Collection

Last weekend, we stepped into Jules Seltzer Associates, a contemporary + classics furniture design store located on Beverly Blvd. in the heart of furniture row. We immediately spied the Vitra Museum Miniature Chair Collection and absolutely fell in love with the mini-iconic pieces.

Every tiny chair was on display and the authenticity and integrity of each piece was quite remarkable. Many of the designers even collaborated in the creation of their own small-scaled reproductions. Per the Vitra Design Museum’s description…“the original intention of the Museum to give visitors access to design not only by means of publications, but also in the form of three-dimensional objects, resulted in the creation of a unique museum product: models of the most important pieces of furniture in design history on a reduced scale.”

Although a bit pricey per chair (pieces starting around $130 and bypassing $600), the inspiration and skilled craftsmanship would have any chair lover or modern furniture enthusiast welcoming these mini-icons into their home.

I've seen these at a high-end design store in Toronto called Bergo and I'm certain they were not this much.

I'm having trouble figuring out the scale in these photos - I think the ones I've seen were perhaps a bit smaller than this? Same beautiful craftsmanship and place in Adorable City, though.

Forgive my blatant lack of HTML skills above. The italics should end after "certain". ;)

They have a 'knock off' version of the mini chairs that sell for about $8-12 but they are all plastic and no where near the quality of these if I'm not mistaken. Giant and Kid Robot sells them as well as various internet sites like ebay. And I do believe they are smaller as well.

Excuse me for focusing on the wrong element of this post, but I really love those shelving units.

Why am I so intrigued by these chairs? May be it's just because I think little things are cute.

@ madampince : I like the shelves too. Perfect for displays.

I have a few of the miniature chairs. I think they are expensive for the quality they offer (but they are really nice looking and great if you love design). Mine are located on a room divider, in special vitrine display boxes.

Size is 1:6, the cheaper ones are 1:12 but they are all plastic and look terrible.

These are carried at Velocity Art and Design in Seattle. I always thought they kind of just seemed like extraneous stuff to fill your home with.

While the idea is cute (especially when used in a modern dollhouse as recently posted)...I'd much rather save my $600 for a chair I can sit my fat butt in. :)
