DIY Modern Planter Bench

We've been thinking about easy and inexpensive ways to spruce up our garden. In addition to the outdoor rugs we've been checking out, we've been thinking about how to have the space for people to sit around without spending a fortune on fancy seating. Then we remembered this great idea that Jonathan blogged last year from Sunset Magazine on how to build your own modern planter bench:

I made this for my dad for Christmas last year. It looks beautiful, but it is much larger in reality than it looks in the picture (plan out where you will put it ahead of time). We found some great pots from Home Depot with a blue oriental glaze, but these too have to be fairly large to accomodate desired sitting height. The instructions were great, and none of the steps were very difficult.

i'd like to try this - but i'd use a plant with less pointy leaves. those look like they could prick someone's butt.
