Inspiration The Vertical Epiphytes Garden

030609Tillandsiagarden01.jpgWhen friends ask us for advice about easy to keep plants, besides succulents, we often mention epiphytes, aka air plants. The Tillandsia, a member of the Bromeliad family, are readily available at local farmer's markets and even at Home Depot's garden section and do especially well in filtered light lit bathrooms, where the daily mist of showers keep the rootless plants happy inbetween soaks and bring a bit of colour into the hard surface of most bathrooms. How we wish we could mimic the Vertical Tillandsia Garden inside the LEED certified Bardessono Hotel. Beautiful, and it just takes half a gallon of water to keep that whole alcove shown above happy and healthy...

030609Tillandsiagarden02.jpgThe beauty of this setup is there is no need for irrigation or drainage. If you have a partially naturally lit bathroom, we could imagine creating a miniature version of this hanging garden near or above your bathroom shower. A blooming bathroom garden sounds pretty nice; learn more about airplants here, or check out more photos of the Bardessono Hotel's garden at their Flickr page.

this is beautiful, what a wonderful idea for bringing lots of green into places without a lot of light!
