Lavender Plants

A sure sign of joyous spring here in LA is the abundant lavender growing like weeds throughout the land -between that and the ever-present rosemary, we are in our scent-heaven!

We’ve been noticing what seems to be a rather new looking lavender plant popping up everywhere (TOP. OLD-SCHOOL LAVENDER BELOW). The stunning bushes look to have honeycomb-like buds and are thick with scent.

What is this new Lavender? Have others noticed? We’d assume it’s been around forever and chalk it up to not being the most plant literate, but our green thumb pal seemed surprised as well.

I love you guys, but let's google. There are at least 25 lavender species and about 150 named cultivars.

Hey Rachel- We did google, and yes, there are a billion Lavender types.

We're more curious about this one new type of lavender that is suddenly everywhere (in Santa Monica, at least), and we thought it interesting. We weren't looking for it's name or type as much as wondering if others have noticed it. It is shockingly different than any of the (25) lavender species we've ever seen.

The bunny-ears lavender is called Spanish Lavender, while the stuff that seems more ordinary is either English or French lavender (hard to tell from the photo).

It's not particularly new, but maybe you just missed it before. There are many varieties of it, including a really gorgeous white version that really looks like little rabbits.

It's a form of Spanish lavender: lavendula stoechas.
