Here's a great example from Flickr of using contrasting colours and texture to create a visually dynamic garden. We love the pebble gravel center they've dotted with cactus and other xeriscape plants; the brightness of the light coloured gravel against the larger dark stones creates a backyard desert island not that unlike a Japanese rock garden, and that should take minimal care thanks to choices in hardy drought tolerant plants. And can we say how jealous we are they've got a deck with a great view and a large storage barn?
