ATLA reader Jennifer shared with us a little tip for the bathroom: "This is for all the bathroom remodelers out there...The easiest way to bring a little natural life into your bathroom is to cut a couple of lengths of ivy( six inches, four inches what ever you like) stick them in a small vase, fill with water, and let them root. They don't need a lot of light, just freshen up the water once in a while. Looks great... a nice way to have something organic in a bathroom."
Any suggestions for plants in bathrooms with NO natural light? Can such a plant exist? Or should I just try growing mushrooms?
Go for lucky bamboo in a bathroom without any natural light. Keep it in a vase/container with a little water (change it every week) and you can have some natural life in the bathroom without any effort. Lucky bamboo is pretty ubiquitous now and can be had cheaply at Target, Ikea, etc.
Speaking of plants in the bathroom, I had kept a jade plant in my bathroom and after a couple of days there, the top layer of the soil caught fungus probably because of all the steam in there. Has anyone else had this problem?

Will the bamboo grow in virtual darkness? We have no window either, and the only time the light is on is when someone in there. Granted, occasionally someone is in there for a loooong time! ;->>
we have a small orchid in the bathroom- no windows either. we've had it for a while so no flowers on it, but it seems to do just fine with a weekly watering/soaking.
One thing, ivy is poisonous to cats.
Hey Marie - glad you mentioned that. One of my cats has a facination with getting up on the cunter and 'helping' me brush my teeth. I have no idea if he gets up there when I'm not around.
