Green Glass Porrn Wine Pitcher at World Market

110507porron.jpg

We must admit, when we first saw one of these at an estate sale, our first thought was that it was a remnant from some "herbal" good times the previous owner must have had (ie. we thought it was something that rhymes with ..."gong")... But then we found out it was for wine, (which I guess could still be a good time!) Regardless we thought the form was beautiful...

Well, the folks at Cost Plus World Market are selling one and included some trivia/background on this traditional vessel that is popular throughout Spain.. It's called a porrn (pronunciation here), and has it's origins in Catalonia. The shape of the vessel is so to ensure that the wine stored inside will have minimal contact with the air, but still be ready for use. Apparently, people use it as a communal wine vessel (ie. drinking straight from it without glasses), and there is a special technique to use it so the wine pours directly into your mouth. The one at Cost Plus is made of recycled green glass and is only $14.99. Has anyone used ever one or does anyone own one?
