The Teastick

122106teastick.jpg
We've mentioned the Teastick earlier this year, but with this recent cold spell over Southern Cali, and if you're still looking for gift ideas, now would be a good time for a little reminder. The Teastick is a great little device. It has a small compartment that holds loose tea leaves, and a sliding screen cover.

It's all stainless steel, and even has a hooked end so it doesn't fall into your cup as you let it steep. Because of it's narrow shape, you can also use it as a stirrer. The whole operation is a breeze: just scoop your tea, slide the cover, and let it steep! A great update to the old tea ball. We received one as a gift recently and have loved it ever since. It's available locally at A+R for $20.

Is it easy to clean? I've tried many shapes for making tea and sometimes it is dificult to get the packed tea leaves out. It does look attractive.

Very neat! I am a big fan of loose tea -- in fact, one of my favorites I bought at Hugo's at Santa Monica Blvd and Kings Road, when I was out in L.A. in July. They have a fabulous selection and their Earl Grey is terrific. Anyway, I drink it a lot and I get so sick of messing with the little stainless tea balls. They are hard to screw and unscrew and the holes are too big, so little pieces of the tea end up in my cup, which I don't like. I wonder if the Teastick has small enough holes for me? Hmmm...

You get better-quality tea if you avoid packing the leaves into any sort of tea ball or stick. Either dump the leaves directly into the pot and use a strainer when you pour, or use a pot with an infusion basket like the pots made by Beehouse.
