My 2007 IKEA catalog came in the mail this week, and I really love a lot of the new things they have going on. Particularily the opening paragraph, which asks "What's happening in your life?" and continues on with ideas on how to "reclaim your own way of living..." I realize this is really just clever marketing copy, but it is a nice reminder that your home is your nest, and your entire house should be your "living room." Anyways- many of the new items feature little thoughtful details, such as this Trof mug that has a small notch cut out of the bottom, so that when its in the dishwasher or while drying upside down, the excess water has a way to escape. For 50 each, this is an extremely affordable example of good design. (They are stackable too!) If you haven't received your catalog, you can browse online here.

I look forward to the annual Ikea catalog arrival like I used to the Sears Wishbook! (Well, *that* was partly because of the men's underwear ads...)
And if someone says "I'm worried about the quality of a fifty-cent coffee mug" I am going to SCREAM.
Such an erotic little coffee mug, dontcha think?
I'm going to buy one and have it silk-screened with a Sears catalog underwear model.
I haven't gotten my catalog yet, but I did the "flip through" thing on the Web site. The rooms are so white! No color. Maybe the print copy will change my mind.
Angela--
SOLD! :)
(although I did graduate to the Jim Palmer for Jockey ads shortly thereafter. Couldn't wait for the weekly Time magazine. The parents thought I was just REALLY into current affairs...!
Sorry to digress!!
I clearly don't have enough to do but....
The UK IKEA catalogue is not available online (I think only the US is) and thanks to your links I have been browsing the US one recently on my laptop. So when my UK one was delivered today it looked a little different to me.
I've checked and (with the exception of one older very stylish woman in the kitchen p.71) anyone not indisputably glamorous (a little older, slightly fatter or more arty-european looking possibly than the 'ideal'?) is either OUT of the US one or substituted with someone more chic...
Interesting, no?
I like the Fusion table and chairs.
I'm bummed that my catalog hasn't arrived yet. My pal on the east side got hers and our favorite thing is to flip through pages while gabbing on the phone, mangling all the Swedish names. "Look at the DIKTAD!" "Never mind that, check out that TJUSIK!"
Look at what Ikea sells to it's citizens in Sweden:

it's totally rad! The whole Varde line is like a beefier uncle to what we get here. boo hoo
The cup looks excellent in the picture, but I've had a few for about a year, and as much as they look good in the cabinets they spill every time someone takes a sip... Scream if you want to, Patrick - but the cup is only good for looking at :)
I have Ikea floor lamps that won't take GE long life light bulbs. I guess I have to buy the Ikea brand. I'm not such a fan of their stuff. It doesn't really seem like such a bargain. Less obviously a big mark up like Williams Sonoma or even Crate and Barrel prices but the aesthetics have put me off more often than appealed to me.
I really like the design. I bought a couple of the mugs last fall and haven't had any problems with them. I was worried at first that the slimmer base would cause the mugs to topple over, but I haven't had that problem at all. And I haven't had any problems with spilling when I drink from them...
The bonus for me was that they do stack, taking up less room in the cupboards.
lesley - that might be just with the 2007 edition. i noticed they took out the interracial family that had been in the last couple years' catalogues. everyone is very blond now.
it's also interesting to note that in the past year or so their new stores have been in places like Atlanta and Houston. wonder if they're dumbing it down for their new red-state audience?
also, i have to say i got a kick out of browsing the swedish ikea site. fascinating how close swedish is to english -- badrum is bathroom, servringsborden are serving tables (think of that english expression, 'bed and board', i.e. bed and table).

The opoponax, you've hurt my feelings.
The South, an Atlanta resident (we're not all dumb Republicans)
Hi,the Opponax - "that might be just with the 2007 edition"?
Say again? Because the other edition I was talking about (and recently had delivered) was...?
(I am a US-a-phile btw. I visit a lot. And I appreciate the reply. Ta)
i'm a southerner myelf, The South.
but, yeah, if you're a scandinavian company known for your liberal attitudes and euro aesthetic, and you wanna market to middle america, you make sure your advertising strategy matches what middle america is used to. just in case.
oh, and lesley, the 2007 catalogue is the one you were talking about, no? the one that just came out? the 2005 and 2006 were the ones i remember seeing the interracial family in.
The Aussie one hasn't arrived yet, so I read the US online one a few weeks back. Our catalogue is always smaller - I think they stock about half the product here that you have.
One year they shot some of the rooms 'Australian' - the lighting was right - 'Euro' lighting is very thin and colourless. The people were mostly Anglo (sigh). A few years back the people and room settings seemed 'Singaporean', with people to match - young hip urban. A few token Anglos made a comeback in 2006 - maybe 6 people in whole catalogue; very few rooms; cold lighting.
I am looking forward to comparing the online & print editions.
Adverbs cannot be plural. It is anyway not Anyways
I have a full set of these dishes and mugs and I am very pleased with them. They hold up to abuse - I don't baby them because they are only .50 each - not a single chip. And I haven't had any mug-related spilling.
I just bought one of these mugs a few weeks ago and it's awesome. I haven't had a single problem with it, and I appreciate the thought that went into it. I love the shape and look.

Commas are our friends. In your case, between "anyway" and "not".
that notch is brilliant! so thoughtful. that little bit of water that hasn't dried just ticks me off sometimes! thank you ikea!
the catalogue was 'released' this weeknd here in montreal. I haven't go a copy yet but will report back as to how much the mug costs here in Quebec, in Can.$. I bet it is over a dollar Can., including taxes. Does the 50 cent price include state taxes - if any - where you are ?
