Q - I am looking at buying this 1947 cinder-block house located in Austin, TX and I recently stumbled upon the personal residence of Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen that has many similar characteristics - cinder-block walls, flat roof, low ceilings, etc. Does anyone out there know if there is a name or movement associated with this style of architecture in Austin? Or maybe have examples of other similar residences? Any information would be appreciated.

Editor - It's been often explained that modernist architects were fond of flat roofs because of their desire for reductive shapes as the cube, thus more often than not, the roof of homes would be designed flat. Architects like Le Corbusier and Vilhelm Lauritzen were partial to utilizing a flat surface onto of their structures and maximizing the space with additional features like a garden or roof deck. Here's a great resource about flat roofs in modern architecture that expands upon the subject.
Design Sponge has a modern day look inside the former private residence of Vilhelm Lauritzen , exhibiting the modernist cinder block aesthetic and construction mentioned.

Micaelan---
What a great-looking home! I don't quite know the answer yet either, but I'll pass it along to a few of my architect friends and see if they have any ideas! Let us know if you end up buying it---I'm sure we'd all love a sneak peek inside!
