Color Clash Help?
Good Questions

081709living-dining-room-0.jpgQ - My husband and I are about to move apartments. You can see from the photos of our new place that the living/dining area has a green wall running down one side. The kitchen in the corner has red/pink marble bench tops. The carpet is cream. The furniture shown is not ours and won't be there when we move in. We move house quite a bit (thanks to the military) so we have a bit of a mish-mash of furniture styles and rarely manage to get a cohesive look together since we're always in rentals of different styles (and we procrastinate!). Our sofas are charcoal and our dining setting is a fairly dark wood...

081709living-dining-room.jpgOur entertainment unit and coffee table are also a dark wood. I have a couple of big antique maps in pale gold frames that I'd like to hang on the coloured wall. I personally can't stand the colour of the green wall. I think it clashes with the marble (which is more red and less pink than in the picture) and I also think it clashes with the view - even though most people would probably say that plants/trees go with everything.

081709living-dining-room-2.jpgWe're going to ask the landlords to paint that one wall but I'm not sure what colour to ask for. I'd like something that makes the room look pulled together, definitely not white or cream. I think I'd like a grey or charcoal wall, which would really help our maps and other artwork stand out but I'm not sure if it would be too much to have the longest wall in a dark colour, and whether it would look wrong with our charcoal sofas. I'd really appreciate any suggestions because I'm one of those people that loves reading Apartment Therapy but has no talent in decorating!

a grey wall could be fine.....the right shade of grey......i'd get some accent pillows to bring in a little color on the sofa......maybe something that coordinates with the counter to tie it all together.....you could also slip cover the upholstered furniture to help coordinate them a bit more.....

Nice apartment! I think that painting that wall the same color as the rest of the room would would be your best bet. If you want an accent wall i would paint the one behind the dining area.

I would suggest a blue grey colour like Sherwin Williams Aqua sphere or a grey like Fawn Brindle- find paint chips that match the permanent features (the bench & carpet) of the house and use them to find complementary colours. Charcoal sofas will work much better in the space than what's in the photos and definitely use cushions to tie it together. I would also suggest some nice pot plants in charcoal pots on the balcony to bring the beautiful view closer.

Wow, I love the view! In fact, I think a nice mellow/neutral accent wall would be great. It would bring a little color to the room, but wouldn't detract from the nice view and the greens of the foliage.

I like the idea of gray, but a warm gray. Very neutral and warm, not too dark.

Here's some accent wall inspiration:

I quite like Stone #4 or #5 for a warm gray.

Good Luck!

You already have an accent wall, your view. Have it painted the same color as the rest of the apartment, then decorate. Work on getting all your furnishings to coordinate, even furnishings from different rooms. Keep in mind, a chair you have in your bedroom should be able to go into a living space in another apartment configuration. You should be able to bring them into any home and have them go together.

I agree with stt64. That amazing view is the accent wall you want all eyes drawn to. Paint the green wall to match the rest of the walls and concentrate on building "rooms" out of what looks like a very large living space.

I'd put your your dining set in the space the long white couch and coffee table are currently occupying and create an L with your couches adjancent to it with the entertainment center on the current green wall. The key here will be conversation groupings that take advantage of the amazing view.

Accent walls are incredibly lame. It's like getting a great haircut on just one side of your head: It only works if you're facing one direction.

Just paint all the walls the same color - perhaps a pale grey.

stt64 hit the nail on the head--nature is your accent wall. And I think a lighter grey would be a fantastic choice. If you want to minimize the look of the counters, make sure it doesn't have a greenish cast to it.

You could go for a deep yellow, think sunshine and daisies for colour inspiration, the wood and couch would be super with a clean yellow such as Behr's Bicycle Yellow or even if you go slightly orange with Macaw.

Charcoal is great, but it might feel very dark compared to the white of the rest of the space.

Or to go with the view, go for a pale blue like Behr's Tender Twilight, you will feel like you are sitting in the sky.

Beautiful view and space!

Thank you so much for all of your comments. Yes it is a gorgeous view - it's on the side of a small valley. At the bottom is a park that's filled on the weekends with kids playing rugby and soccer so there's lots of happy noise as well!

I was so excited by the possibility of adding some colour that I hadn't really considered the view to be the feature. I agree with that now so I'm going to paint the green wall something more neutral and less attention grabbing, probably a pale grey or the same shade as the other walls. Thank you for the colour suggestions and decorating/arrangement suggestions as well, they're very helpful and I'm really glad I posted my question!
