Good Question: How Do I Re-Wire My Old Lamps?

wires.jpgDear AT LA,
I have some great old lamps that belonged to my Grandmother, but they are kind of haggard and the cords and plugs need some help. Is this something that is easy to do on my own? I’m not the best at fixing things, but have put in some dimmers so I’m not completely helpless with things electric. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jennifer.

Hey Jennifer,
We have to say that our favorite place is a bit of a trek but well worth it. Practical Props in Burbank is the best repair shop we know. They can replace your old cords with new, and even cool old-school cloth ones. Defiantly worth check out.

Good luck! – Alec

I've had really good experiences at Ray Ferra's Iron 'n Antique Accents on La Brea Ave (at 3rd). They can re-wire anything over there; and their prices are very fair. I once took them a vintage spun-resin swag lamp on a clunky brass chain with a matching brass finial. They replaced the finial with a simple inset zinc disc and switched out the cord/chain combo with a simple heavy-gauge white cord--which really updated the look of the lamp. I believe the total cost was around $30.
