Good Question: Modern Jewelry Box for My Girlfriend?

082007_boxes.jpgWe'll keep this one anonymous: I'm looking for a nice, modern jewelery box to give as a gift for my girlfriend. Most that I see seem to be posing as relics from my grandmother's house or look better suited to a country cottage than my girlfriend's modern, mid-century-inspired house.

Any tips?

Great question! We think these new Jonathan Adler lacquered boxes are just the thing for your girlfriend's jewelry. Now these aren't quite available (check back on his site often for updates). So do any of you have some tips for this aspiring Casanova?

Also there are cheaper ones at CB2, but only in white: Osaka boxes.
Another option are these cool metal ones from Rare Device (I think you have to get the inserts separately): Kbox.

I have little red toolboxes as my jewellery and makeup boxes.

They were cheap they are really cute and my boyfriend jokes about them.

Also a very cool talking point. Lol.

Good LUCK!

I've seen very similar lacquer boxes at Japanese gift shops. They come in various sizes and colors. Unfortunately, it has been awhile so I don't remember exactly which shops, but if you live in LA, you might want to look in Little Tokyo.

I use a train case from Sephora. What do you think of this?

Hold on a second…as a jewelry lover, I have to say that a jewelry box is more than a plain box. It’s padded to protect your jewelry, and compartmentalized to help you organize it. It should be easy to open, too. That’s why a lot of jewelry boxes stick with the fiddly old-fashioned look, with the drawers and trays and all. I went to a lot of trouble to find myself a plain unadorned one that still had compartmentalized trays and ring holders inside.

For your girlfriend, I found this one, which looks nice and sleek, It’s definitely not Grandma’s jewelry box!

I really like mirrored jewelry boxes; they are modern-looking and sleek, but still sparkly and glamorous.

This one's from Target, but I've seen tons of others, some a little girlier.

This I found while Googling for you, and I adore it, but it's probably too frilly for a strict modernist type. Still, very un-Grandma.

Wow, I was just starting to think about this very same question since I just changed out my dresser and now my existing jewelry box doesn't quite cut it. I have a bit of a jewelry "problem," you might say, and am thinking about moving on to a jewelry armoire but they are all hideous. I can't afford the mini-Nelson chest but am starting to think about getting a Colombo Boby trolley to stash it all in. . . that being said, the best choice for cool yet practical jewelry boxes was Hold Everything. Darn it, I miss that place!

Actually, my boyfriend made me a jewelry box as a gift. I still think it is the sweetest present I've ever been given. If you can borrow some tools from a friend and have a sander, then I would suggest going with that route. I promise she'll love it no matter what.

I second EAC that a jewelry box should be more than just storage - especially with sterling silver, because you want to avoid tarnishing!

You could line any of the pretty lacquered boxes with silvercloth (cloth that prevents tarnishing) or with a paper substance (I can't remember the name), both of these products will protect silver.

If you're looking for actual jewelry cases, nile corp is the way to go. Their 'salesman cases' are pretty cool and very non-cottage-y:

Or you could stack a few of these:

and customize the tray inserts to hold her specific jewelry.

Oh, Sephora - swoon! Love love love the Paris shop on the Champs Elysee! Wonder if they have a UK website... Second the votes for Muji acrylic and mirrored boxes and also the idea of making one, that's really sweet!

I *just* went through this.

Here's what I ended up getting:
http://www.cleverwood.com/canyon_7_drawer_jewelry_box.htm

It's expensive, but it's handcrafted and gorgeous and looks lovely in my mid-century home.

There are others on the site smaller in scale and price, but after looking at every jewelry box under the sun, this was the only one that did it for me.

Good luck!

I love the look of those laquered boxes, but think compartments are a must.

How about the red lacquer one on sale at redenvelope.com

Lee Valley has these "Watchmaker's Cases" which I have been using for storing beads. But they're excellent for jewelry too. These come in different sizes and while I prefer the aluminum box, the pasteboard boxes look nice too. I'm thinking of adding different colors of felt to the bottom of the containers to add some interest and cushion my jewelry.
