Good Question: Place to Live in Encinitas?

081808-boat.jpgMoving to N. San Diego County and would love any tips on finding a small house to rent. We are looking at Encinitas due to its proximity to work, ocean, etc. Any other suggestions? Anyone familiar with Encinitas? Fun things in the area? Start and end search on craigslist?

Anyone down south have info to chime in? Our go-to is always craiglist--we've found every place we've lived in in LA there. We did a quick search and found this 2 bedroom duplex for $1525 in Encinitas but didn't have any luck finding small houses.

Where else should we look readers? And is there a better place to look, location-wise, for a place to live in North County San Diego?

If you end up in Encinitas, you won't be able to miss the boat shaped houses pictured up top. Read up on how they ended up there right here. And make sure to check out Gardenology!

Encinitas is awesome! The definite go-to is craigslist for rentals, and you just have to keep on it. You can also check out the online classifieds of the SD Reader, though there's a lot of overlap with craigslist.

Also, check out Cardiff and Leucadia. Both are technically Encinitas, but with their own thing going on. If I were going to put down money, I'd say that Cardiff would be your best bet at finding an affordable small house. Plus, it has the whole charming by-the-Sea thing in its name, and you'd get to put that on your address.

I lived in encintas/cardiff for many years. The best way to find places is to just drive around the neighborhoods and looks for 'for rent' signs. The best places usually don't make it into the reader or craigslist.

I just moved from San Diego and I agree with swiss: driving around neighborhoods is your best bet.

Hah - I grew up in Encincitas (now live in DC area). Get as close to the water as you can. I still remember my old address from 30 years ago (that was painful to say) on Sprucewood Street. I was there last year to see the old house. When I grew up there, it was mostly flower farms. Now, it's kinda overdeveloped.

I grew up in Encinitas, now live in L.A. I agree, driving around helps. Try Leucadia around Hermes and Vulcan for cheaper places. Try Orpheus by the beach for the rare but cool & funky beach rental. The North County times has good rental listings too.
Seeing the boat apartments make me a little homesick. Be sure to take a dip at Swami's beach for me.

I live on the East coast, but saw those 2 great little "house boats" in the picture in person when I visited the San Diego area several years ago. Thanks for refreshing the memories!

Encinitas is the best!!! I am so jealous. After college I am so moving back!!! Get a place west of the 5. In those neighborhoods along Vulcan in Leucedia (now technically part of Encinitas) there are lots of old little bungalows. Lucky you. Lots of shopping in the boutiques. The people there are the best. They are the rich people who wear flip flops and cuttoffs every day and young surf bums. Aaahhh, memories. Go eat an Angelo's gyro for me. There is such a great community vibe there. ENJOY!!

oh yeah, check the Reader, craigslist, NC times, Union Trib, but Swiss is right, you just have to drive around.

Does that tennis club (I think it was called Surf n Turf), just north of Encinitas (Solano Beach?), still exist? It was attached to a miniature golf course. I grew up playing tennis there in the early 80s. And the tennis pro there was soooo yummy looking. Ah, memories of me at age 15 cruising the tennis pro . . . .

I would totally try SolanA Beach! It has a wonderful shopping area called The Cedros Design District! There are some nice apartment rentals all along the beach, just south of Fletcher's Cove. So as the towns go, heading North.....Del Mar, Solana Beach, Cardiff by the Sea, Leucadia, etc.
All great beach towns (Del Mar is just too-too pricey).

I used to drive down there almost every weekend to see the almost air-brushed-like floating moon over the Ocean at Moonlight Beach when I was a beach bunny dating an artist/surfer living in Encinitas.
Driving around the best way to find a cute rental in Encinitas.

I've lived in Encinitas since i was 5

As you've probably guessed by now, driving around is indeed the best way aside from craigslist.

You can certainly check out cardiff and solana and leucadia,
but if you're set on encinitas (can't blame you) you might find what you're looking for if you take F st over the hill (near F and vulcan) there's some cute little houses back there. don't worry about going too far back there, it's all nice

This is so cool!!!
I am moving to Encinitas next month - or trying, rather. We have a large, old awesome dog.

I'm east and cannot drive around looking for rentals and on CL for places in Encinitas/Cardiff/Solana, there are slim pickings due to our dog.
We'd prefer a small house with some sort of yard.

So - if there is anyone in the area who is willing to lend a hand in the search, we'd be forever grateful and also willing to pay a finders.

Can any of you locals recommend places to look for little studios? Craigslist has some but if I am in the area driving around, where should I go?

Thanks!
