Fairfax resident Ted sent us this rug related question: "I live in a recently refurbished Fairfax area duplex with a quandary about what to do about a rug in the dining room. Den and living area have large colorful oriental/Afghan rugs. Walls have colorful art, but I am not sure what to do in the dining room.

The table is a piece of art with a 5 foot round glass top on it and six chairs, all in different colors. I am looking to put a rug in the dining room and looking for something that would be a 9 foot square rug, but cautious about the color of the rug taking away from the colors in the table. Room is a perfect square also, and walls are white. I realize the custom route is what i might be looking at, but what kind of rug?"
Ted, we're equally cautious, as any colourfully patterned rug will take away from the focal point of the artwork ontop of the table and create a visual overload that will just weaken its impression. Have you considered a large circular, single colour rug that compliments the colour of the artwork? Personally, I'd just forgo adding a large rug underneath, as you've already got so much going on with the table, artwork, and different coloured chairs. Perhaps our readers have some other ideas of how to tie in the artwork, a rug and the whole room for Ted?
This would be a good application for the FLOR rug tiles--you can make an area rug to fit the desired dimensions and there is a huge color selection...I think it might be nice if you highlighted the blue color in the table....

really would not have a rug underneath that "over the top" table, even a textured monocramatic would be too much next to this table

In thinking on this while making my newspaper rounds here at work, I realized that if you do go with a rug/carpet of some sort, go dark and in a solid and round.
Here was my thinking. While the table itself is over the top style wise (in a good way though), it still seems to float in the room with nothing to anchor it as is. The floor is a moderately light color from what I can see on my monitor here at work so my thought was a simple broadloom or cut pile carpet, or perhaps a low cut shag (check it with the table to be sure it won't fight with it's design) in a dark brown or brown/black or similar type of color that is round but perhaps an inch or two bigger than the outside circumference of the table and chairs combined to place under it.
That way, the carpet will anchor the room, give it warmth, but without calling much attention to itself and will not work against the table and all that it has going, not try to add anything more to the room that is already there, but simply add a visual weight to the room, pulling it all together.
But when I saw the pic again, I realized the floor and some of the other details and now that I have typed this, I still think it may well work in this instance, but remember, keep the carpet simple and dark. If you do go this way, I'd suggest getting a remnant, have it cut to size, but round and have it edged and then add a simple non slip pad to the bottom and voila, a rug!
Good luck with whatever you do decide to do.

Try a Momeni rug in a round shape... they have a huge selection in their 'New Wave' collection. A lot of vibrant colors to work with your color scheme, hopefully that would compliment and not take away from the art in your table. There are a variety to choose from anyway and a ton of different size options...

Good luck!
