Good Question: What Color Feet for the Sofa?
Los Angeles

100808_sofaclack.jpgI just had this gorgeous tufted velvet sofa custom designed for my home studio but the sofa was supposed to have white feet, and white trim around the base, instead of just black feet. The company has of course agreed to change it, but I'm kind of getting used to it how it is (although it seems a little boring). Should I keep it as is, or switch to the white?

Hi Jill--

Personally we'd stick with the black otherwise the white base and feet will be very matchy matchy with that red chair you've got next to it. Plus the black with the grey just looks nice and dramatic. Also, would you be willing to share where you had the sofa made?

Readers, whaddya think?

My vote goes for the white. I don't think it's too matchy with the armchair because the armchair has a contrasting upholstery color.

That being said, the pictures are annoying- they're crooked and hung at different levels. Ugh!

The black is really nice. Otherwise I would go with oak or something wooden as an accent. Beautiful!

I would stick with black -- the feet aren't all that amazing. While they are certainly nice, I think drawing all that attention just to the feet would distract from the great tufted back. On the other hand, if you had some black and white pillow (and maybe a splash of red), then white feet would be harmonious and not an attention grabber.

I much prefer the black. The fabric is beautiful, and white seems to me to be distracting.

I'm curious: where did the sofa come from?

I change my mind! I didn't see the 2nd image with the bone/whitewashed spiral feet. Definitely get the new feet!

white, or ideally really light grey. I personally really do not like the black

white would definitely draw your attention to the feet. i'd stick with the black! keep in mind if you are vaccuming that rug, or someone goes to sit down and accidentally kicks a leg, the white is going to get ruined real quick.

Difficult to choose. The mock up with the white feet is pretty nice. I would (in my mind*) go get what I ordered on principle, but I also like the black feet, and hey, no more effort or aggravation. Sometimes it's nice to accept what's done and get on with your life, because it just happens to look perfect also.

How much time and effort you want to continue in getting it right when it's already great, vs. just getting what you asked for, the principle of the thing, plus the additional concept of what would have happened if you got something awful instead - you wouldn't suddenly say, you know now that I have the option, I think I'll change my order to black feet. You would still want white feet. Then again, now that you've seen the look, maybe you don't like it as much as you thought you would. Being a difficult customer (even when you're technically right, unfortunately) has its costs too, down the line.

*I think I would ultimately stagnate my options out of procrastination and accept the black feet, actually. Better to admit my tendency at the beginning than to let them know 6 months later that I really did want the white feet only for them to say I missed my chance.

PLUS, gorgeous sofa. It's love for me, too bad it's custom. Too bad for me, I mean.

beautiful sofa! i would stick with the black. they sort of disappear and give the sofa a floating effect. i think white, or any other color, would distract from and compete with what is already perfect.

Gorgeous sofa. I think that the black is more "distinguished library" and the white is more "Elle Decor trendy." It depends on what look you're going for overall.

For you, go with white. I can tell you're more fearless than I am. You can do it!

black and everyone here is right, the sofa is perfect. Either would be lovely but ease your mind, go with black and fix your pictures above the sofa. You have lovely taste!

I think I'm in the minority, because I vote white. So much more dramatic. But the black looks good too, so if it'd be a hassle to have them changed, it's not going to look bad to keep the black.

The legs are great as they are. White would detract from the sofa itself which is very beautiful.

If anything, ask the company to rework the upholstery on the bottom cushion. It has a bit too much sag for a new piece and should have a better fit (the rightside of the cushion is not quite flush with the arm of the sofa and it rises in the middle).

When I saw the question, white immediately sprang to mind. When I saw the picture with the white, I realized, like you, I liked the black better. With the black, the sofa stands out. With the white, your eyes are drawn ot the legs. I think the white looks like you're trying just a bit too hard. I like the leg style of the black better too.
