Good Question: What Magazines Do You Like?

questions_man.jpgHello AT, with so many choices out there, I was wondering what interior design magazines you recommend?

- Nancy in Hollywood

Nancy- its probably no secret that in terms of pure eye candy, ELLE Decor is our mag of choice. We just find the layouts of the homes to be the most beautiful and stylish around. If we were looking for more practical information, wed grab the new Domino. While its format reads a little young for us (think Urban Outfitters catalogue) there is a lot to be learned. For cutting edge we turn to Wallpaper, but we admit to sticker shock when ever we pick one up, so be sure to flip through first to make sure you like what you are about to buy.

Anyone else have an opinion?

I've always loved Dwell. For candy for indoor and outdoor living I turn to Home Beautiful and House and Garden. I try to find ideas everywhere. Anything about color gets my attention.

I agree that elle decor is the most beautiful and diverse as far as interiors. I also enjoy met home, however sometimes the homes seem a little too perfect/decorated and don't reflect personal style. I also love Dwell especially for modern/pre fab ideas.
Living etc is a great British mag, but again it costs more.

Living, etc. is really great and worth the additional expense. Really fresh, interesting ideas.

I love Elle Decoration and Living Etc. Even though they're expensive I get so much inspiration from them. I also read Dwell, Elle Decor, Domino, Ready Made and Australian Vogue Living when I can find it.
I used to read Wallpaper religiously but it changed so much after the founders left. I feel it's a different magazine and it doesn't seem as fun or interesting now. But I used to love it - it was total interior design porn.

Along with the usual suspects, don't overlook British shelter magazines. My favorite is Ideal Home, where the October color schemes looked remarkably like the "I've Got Color" contest entries here. British Homes and Gardens also isn't bad. I'm not ultra-cutting-edge modern, though.

The Italian magazine Abitare is my favorite for contemporary design.

I would agree with Abitare, and add both Surface and *Wallpaper to the fray.

I really like French AD (Architectural Digest) - unlike its American counterpart, it is modern and cutting edge. Italian Elle Deco is also very good...

Livingetc is truly one of the best decor magazines out there. It's relaxed chic decor. Very european - cool. sleek, but relaxed.

I especially like Domino. Budget Living, House Beautiful, House and Garden, Livingetc, Western Interiors and Interior Design, Elle Decor Magazine.

Instyle Home is a great magazine but I dont think it comes out monthly.

Angeleno and LA Confidential are good magazines that feature beautiful interior design projects.

Sometimes I pick up the random issues of Better Homes magazines.

Hot!: UK Elle Decoration , Living Etc. (current issue is packaged with "gift-with-purchase" plastic coasters). Close runner-ups: Elle Decor Italia (but high issue price is a bit prohibitive), Wallpaper (a fave despite being pure aspirational design porn), Dwell (but a bit boring lately and stuck in the same stylistic groove for the past year or so), Domino (very user/consumer-friendly despite femme editorial slant). Getting better: Elle Decor, Western Interiors. In a rut: Metropolitan Home (zzzzzz). Wha'happened?: Surface (too many estoric conceptual design pieces that will never see production, and not enough on-the-market durable goods). Wild Card (for inspiritation): Conde Nast Traveler.

Domino is so super-duper-girly, yet I succumb to its charms monthly.

My favorite shelter mag remains Canadian House & Home.

Of the Country titles, I prefer Country Home over Country Living by a small margin.

And House & Garden's always-moving opener by Dominique Browning and closer by uber-wit Mayer Rus makes H&G a real favorite.

Met Home, House Beautiful, Architectural Digest and Elle Decor round out my subscription list.

Currently, my only design subscription is Domino. This is to starve the clutter bug because when mags come into the house it's almost impossible to get them to leave.

Have you looked at domino magazine's website? I just started editing it. Any advice about what you'd like to see there? Notice any typos... Let us know.

Anyone know how to get a subscription to the British Elle Decor? (I don't always see it or remember to get it).

World of Interiors, if you can stand to be in your own home after reading it.
