Hi AT:LA- So, you know the Hollywood Standard Hotel has those patio "umbrellas" that are just flat round circles on posts in white? Does anyone know who makes those where can I buy one? Its making me crazy trying to find them online. Patio umbrellas are 90% hideous. Thanks!

Hi Jaime,
Ah yes, The Standard Hotel in Hollywood. I remember when it first opened (hard to believe it's been almost 10 years!), I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that they were bold enough to put down blue astro-turf. Good times... but I digress- I think what might help your search is to try the term "sun shade" as opposed to "umbrella", since these particular ones don't actually open up like a traditional umbrella does.
A quick search yielded this
single version from Inmod, but they do also have a
triple version too. A bit pricey, but very swanky... Does anyone have one of these, or know another source for this type of sun shade?
I spent several years dreaming of owning one of these, and actively searching on the internet for a manufacturer until one day... A stop at my favorite thrift store yielded my biggest find yet. I still remember seeing it from up the street thinking, no - it can't be... but it really was. For $40. Thrift stores and a little luck aside, you can find one at www.modernica.net for $1495. The Inmod one is obviously a much better deal!

Brown Jordan makes the original, and they are still in production. Expensive, of course. I think the Inmod version is probably the best bet if you buy it new. You can always be patient and wait for it to show up on eBay or Craigslist... But it might be almost as expensive to refurbish that one, after shipping etc as to buy it new from Inmod.

I imagine you could make a cheap version with pvc pipe (although it might not hold up in the wind) or maybe just a regular pipe painted white? Some canvas cloth and grommets? It seems somehow possible...

looks like something a welder could whip up in no time fairly cheaply, an awning company could make up a cover, heck the gromets are easy, you could make the cover yourself. A few years ago I had a welder make a smaller version of a Cappellini table to be used for a desk, it set me back something in the neighborhood of $250 for the frame, I had a glass top made elsewhere...
