Good Questions: A Chair Like Angelina's?

010809atlagoodquest01.jpgI have been searching for a chair like this one shown with Angelina Jolie above and would love to find some websites and locations where I can find unique, 1 piece furniture...aside from ebay and craigslist (haha). Any sourcing help would be wonderful...

Got a good question you'd like answered? Send your queries and a photo or two illustrating your question, and we'll see if the ATLA team or our readers can help you out.

010809atlagoodquest02.jpgThe most fortunate seat above reminds us a lot of Studio JSPR's Plastic-Fantastic series of rubber coated antique furnishings (definitely not in the affordable range). A similar effect could be achieved by lacquering a chair in black (because of it's ornate nature, perhaps best done by a professional refinisher) or having it painted by an automotive paint specialist if a high gloss finish is desired (just remember to remove the upholstery!).

Anyone have any good recommendations for sources for seating in this style? Here in LA, we know quite a few "European" style furniture stores in Koreatown that specialize in faux antique chairs like this, but don't remember any of the stores' names. We're sure the Rose Bowl Flea Market and Fairfax Flea Market occasionally offer seating of similar style also.

Angelinas chair is a design by Dutch designer Maarten Baas (see http://www.maartenbaas.com/) from a series called Smoke.

This chair is from a series of charred wood furniture produced fairly recently. A few Googles came up short but I'll keep trying.

Definitely in the high-end/Moss price range though.

Try searching for "Bergere chair" on eBay. There are tons of them looking for a home, a coat of black paint, and some new upholstery.

In Los Angeles they carry it at Twentieth on Beverly and Crescent Heights.

Pieces of furniture are literally burned, after which they are preserved in a clear epoxy coating.

Woah. Gorgeous!! And, I'm assuming, impossible to DIY properly. The danger! The beauty!

I guess if she was sitting on a cardboard box you would want to know where that box is from..beautiful photo and that is a fun reinvention or play on an Italian Rococo
chair.

Actually I really do LOVE the Smoke Line of Furniture by Maarten Baas.

The Pinnacle Grill aboard the new Holland America cruiseliner Eurodam has several identical copies of the Studio JSPR's Plastic-Fantastic armchairs in a sort of maroon color...

...I was completely unimpressed - They look exactly like what they are: a Rococo chair dipped in colored rubber. They're not the least bit elegant and feel weird when you shift in your seat.

The DIY aspect actually isn't very hard. You use a really hot flame (propane torch) and scorch the surface without letting it catch... A spray bottle of water is probably a necessity of course.

I've seen lots of DIY people do it before (by lots, I mean someone, somewhere, and it looked easy).

Don't know what you consider recent, but this series was produced in 2002. I only know because I've been obsessed with that chair and the chaise lounge for years.

Like Hinke said, the chair is from a series designed by Maarten Baas. Three of the pieces from the Smoke series (including the chair) were reproduced and made available through moooi.com.

If you've never been to either of the above mentioned websites (Moooi & Maarten Baas), they are definitely worth a look, but be careful you may fall in love.

BTW, if anyone is interested and checks out the sites, I'd love an opinion on the Smoke chandelier. Almost purchased it at Twentieth in LA a few years ago but decided it wasn't a piece I'd want forever and to justify the price tag it would damn well have to be. What do you think, did I make the right choice?

go to a thrift store, get a faux or real victorian chair. Reupholster it in black velvet after painting the frame in gloss black.

I second that. I hope that was photoshopped, because she looks like she's got cancer.
