Hello AT,
I've been living in my new place for a year and I still don't have art on the walls! I want to buy some art (or create some art) on a budget, and have been searching ebay with no luck. Any intereting ideas for where to find art, online or otherwise, that won't bust my budget and that goes beyond the vintage travel or museum poster? I'm open to all kinds of possibilities.
Thanks, Simone
Hey Simone, you've come to the right place. First, we suggest plugging the word "art" into the ATLA search bar and see what comes up.
A few posts that we like are the Aunt Beep website, which supports LA artists and has a wide (price) range of pieces.
We still smile at loyal AT reader Dana's Kitchen clocks which create a smart installation without breaking the bank.
a fun thing (which we have never done) is Allpopart.com, which lets you create your own personalized pop art creations.
And Finally, we have found some great things at the Melrose Trading Post, which is at Fairfax High School (7850 Melrose Ave. 323-655-7679) every Sunday.
Others?
check out my site...all Los Angeles artists, and available to purchase online or you can come by our showroom! :)

ALEC! Thanks for the plug! You beat me to the punch! :)

If you have a decent digital camera - you can easily create your own art. Use the highest resolution setting possible.
Shutterfly.com can do up to 20x30 prints ($23).
My spring/summer project is to hit the farmers market and take photos of all fruits/vegetables that aren't green.
Repetition (of subject) and grouping is probably the easiest way to make 'art' look cohesive.
Thanks for that allpopart link - very cool!
Also you might want to check out rasterbator - mentioned somewhere on this site.
Some of the smallest-coolest-apartment-contest entrants had creative solutions to what to put on the walls: framed paint chips (remarkable!), exquisite fabrics stretched like art canvas, empty shadow box frames arrayed in groups. Handmade Japanese paper frames up well, enlarged and doctored (cropped, tinted, whatever) photos of your own making do as well. Ornate (empty) frames found at flea markets or online look fine while waiting for art to fill them. Or just go and get some artisit's canvases and paint, and get creative. Several small canvases painted in solid colors and arranged together look like....art!
On ebay there's a store that sells Chinese papercuts. Some are quite pretty and cheap as well. So ebay "chinese paper cuts" I guess.

Great new site for artists to sell their own artwork. I'm surprised it took so long for someone to do this.
thanks everyone. I'll definitely go check those out. I'm near Fairfax High and have never been to their Sunday market. And if anyone else has a favorite search on ebay, or a favorite artist, please let me know!
Does anyone have any sugestions for art sales or auctions from schools/colleges like Otis? I think this would be a hgood idea too...
I love Portland artist Amy Ruppel (http://www.amyruppel.com/). She has online sales every 1-2 months, with great prices on lovely encausting paintings. She has also started featuring "guest artists" for each sale. The next one is April 21st.
And of course, if you're in the San Francisco area on May 20th, I will be having a group show! It's a fundraising event for an organization called Fertile Hope.
More info is here: http://www.aquarabbit.net/when.htm
[sorry for the shameless plus!]
I'm pretty sure that word was supposed to be "plug." Which now makes this whole thing even more pathetically shameless. Sigh.

if you live in LA there's the Art in the park or art in the garden or something like that in Beverly Hills in May.
I think blueprint has their sale that month too. Could be an expensive month for me.
Oh yes, and tiny showcase has *great* limited edition prints. A new one each week!

Whoa, Simone. You live in The 'Fax and have never been to the flea market at Fairfax High? You must go! Over the years, I've gotten many good pieces there (including the vintage seascape on the Flickr website above for $15). In addition to great vintage art finds, a number of contemporary artists have sold their art there in the past(i.e. Jay Brockman who used to sell his great LA streetscapes).
Hi, Simone. I write the eBay Scavenger column, and I responded a few months ago to someone who asked about finding art on eBay. Here's the link.

I like to search on "portrait" and select "realism" and various periods in the early 20th century. If you like thrift-store portraits (as I do) this works fairly well.
Good luck.

That Beverly Hills Art Show is called Affaire in the Garden, and it's May 20 and 21. http://www.beverlyhills.org
I'll be showing there along with many of my favorite colleagues. Some great and unique work for your walls and tabletops, and at the show you can meet the artists. I try to update my artist links to highlight artists who will be at my shows, so drop by my site for a cyber preview of some of my pics and picks.
www.audreyheller.com (Is it still a shameless plug if someone else brought it up first? Or is it just a plus?)

I am an artist living in L.A., AT freak! I show at the Acuna Hansen gallery in Chinatown (www.ahgallery.com) but I have a fun, A PAINTING A DAY KEEPS THE PROZAC AWAY site where I sell daily works on paper for $45!!!! (as opposed to $2500 a piece at my gallery)....It's a great bargain and there is some very fun work to pick through. Most all have been sold but I do 'copies' which is really not a copy but more of a riff of a series...Anyway, it'c a super cheap way to start collecting work!!
enjoy!
