Good Questions: Affordable Wall Panels?
Los Angeles

022709atlaInhabit1.jpgI'm wondering if anyone has a suggestions about where to get less expensive hanging panels like these ones by Inhabit. I'm specifically looking for something that's long and will cover the living room wall which unfortunately also includes a door in the middle of it (inexplicably, my walk-in closet is really a walk-through closet right into the living room). My TV is along this wall in front of the door, so I'm looking for panels that are a little more on the muted, non-distracting side. $116 per panel seemed a little steep so I'd love to hear if people have cheaper suggestions!

Got a good question you'd like answered? Send your queries and a photo or two illustrating your question, and we'll see if the ATLA team or our readers can help you out.

You could get a similar look by buying wallpaper that you like (don't have any specific recommendations, sorry, but there's plenty of talk about them online) and then use these hangers (http://www.posterhanger.com/).

I love the Inhabit Timber panels, too, but just couldn't afford $350 for the set. The IKEA tree panels (linked above) really didn't do it for me when I saw them in the store.

So, here's what I did:

Table runners! They're narrower at 14", but generally 6 feet long. I purchased three on sale from CB2 for less than $10 each. They're now discontinued, but you may be able to find them on ebay, etc. Here's a peak: http://reviews.cb2.com/7259/4388/reviews.htm

Many other cool, modern table runners are available if you look around. Try CB2, West Elm, Pier One, Target, etc.

And, I found these clear poster hangers for only $2.50 a set, and they easily cut to size with a pair of sissors: http://www.frameplace.com/xhanger.htm

Good luck!

I have a 9-foot Anno Uni panel hanging in a tall space near my front door, and everyone thinks it's an expensive textile. FYI, if you want to hang it from a rod, you need to sew a rod pocket. They are unhemmed to work with the Ikea panel system.

Buy some wallpaper:

Then get some of those Danish Poster hangers designed by Jorgen Moller:

easy.

The panels IKEA sells weren't to my taste either, but I did buy the ceiling fixtures, I then bought some panels of curtain fabric and attached to the IKEA fixings and hey presto a cheap but creative solution!

thetroll,

Easy, yeah, but two rolls of that beautiful Cavern wallpaper (it's only 15' long) the poster hangers would actually cost *more* than the 3-panel set of Inhabit flats!

@Almost AD

Perhaps you should buy the Fermliving paper, which is 30ft long and only $115 a roll?

I saw an HGTV show once where they blew up a horizontal picture onto banner type 'fabric' at Kinko's, and then mounted them on curtain rods (top and bottom) by sewing the edges to make a track for them, or those poster hangers would work, too. Sorry, I can't find any link to it online, but it would give the same effect as the 2nd example of what you have above.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I'll have to do more research into the idea of using table runners or wallpaper - they look like some pretty good alternatives.

Thanks again!

Try Urban outfitters - they have a birch tree mural that might work

Try a fabric store.

I was in a slightly better local store (not a chain like JoAnn's) and they had some decorative panels for curtains that could easily be modified into "tapestries" in this way.
