Matt sent us this question accompanied with a photo, asking us to pose this question to the AT Community for their much respected opinion: I'm getting settled into my new apartment and have one last room to paint...my bedroom. I planned on painting it sage green, but may have a problem. One wall of my room has two closet doors and a large metal door type thing for the heater. I think if I paint that wall green, the three large white rectangles will make it look real strange. So I thought about painting an accent wall... but which wall(s)?

I would move the bed to under the window and make that your accent wall.

Why not paint the doors and door frames too? No one said they had to be white, right?

I suggest painting the doors the same color as the walls to prevent from breaking up the wall color.
I live in a small apartment with lots doors / windows / wall trim and I painted all the doors and trim one shade darker than the wall color in a satin finish and it really makes the apartment seem bigger and more complete. When the doors and trim were white, the space felt very broken up and choppy. Now it's one cohesive space.
Also, ever think of putting the head of the bed under the window? Then the bed won't face the closet doors. Good luck!

Hard to see whats going on with the room from that 1 pic. The doors don't seem like much of an issue to me... They wont seem strange if the wall is painted. The thing in the corner, maybe just get a chinese screen type thing to cover it if it bothers you.
My issue with the room seems to be that while in bed your head is on the same wall as the door and that's weird... and bad luck. plus you wake up every morning looking at the doors you think look odd. That can't be good. If the room allows, I'd move the bed so your head is under the window. It looks like it might be a tight fit to the closets if you do that, but the proportions are not totally clear.
Or, if you wanna keep everything the way it is and paint an accent wall, paint the accent wall behind your headboard.

I agree with the first comment. The window is the best element of the room, and it deserves the accent color!

From the picture it looks like the door to the room is the point from where the picture is taken, so I'd say you could paint the wall with the window. That way people will be immediately drawn to it instead of the closet doors. If that's not the case, paint the largest wall without the closet doors (looks rectangular, so that would be the wall your bed is on). You could also paint the whole thing and then paint the closet doors a shade lighter or darker than your chosen hue.

I agree with the previous posters who said to move the bed under the window. I think it's better feng shui too, to have the bed facing the door.

It looks to me like if you put the bed under the window you won't be able to get one of the closet doors open.

Same color as the walls baby.
You also need to buy some big, long drapes for that window
so that it doesn't look so squat.
Don't move the bed over. then you have no access to the
closets. Be careful with sage green. Get second opinions and come up with a couple of options. That color can go country granny or hospital room in about 2 seconds.

Thanks for the pointers everyone, keep them coming!
As far as moving the bed, I thought about putting it on each of the three walls. My thinking with putting the bed under the window is that i'd be staring at a wall when I wake up. Currently when I wake up, I look over at my alarm clock and can see outside (3 palm trees). http://images45.fotki.com/v1360/photos/5/51621/6847793/IMG_8456-vi.jpg
Would it be strange to paint two walls (window and wall with bed)?
Thanks!!
Matt

If it were me, I'd paint the wall with the window.
I wouldn't do the wall above the bed because that's doesn't seem like a wall that comes into focus when you enter the room, and nor can you enjoy it when you're lying down on the bed.
If I had to play the devil's advocate - you could consider painting the wall with the 2 doors on it. But that would be calling attention to the doors. Or you could paint just the doors with an accent color. But then again you would be calling attention to the doors.
Like I said earlier, if it were me I would go with the window side of the wall.

If you want to keep the bed where it is, paint the doors the same color as the walls, hang some great art on each door, then you will have something interesting to look at.

Just paint the doors too! It'll look great.

I have a similar set-up in my current apartment. Our bedroom is tiny, and there were two doors opposite the bed, one a closet and one is a door going to the hall way between apartments that is painted shut. One of the other walls is floor to ceiling built-ins painted white. The other two walls have large windows. I agonized over what color and painted it a light green. Like you are saying, it looked too choppy and made the room seem really small. I decided to paint it white, and painted the wall behind the bed a light green. I put white curtains on the window and it frames the bed nicely. You could move the bed under the window and try the same thing, or paint the wall opposite the doors green and the rest white.

I'd paint the entire room a medium/greyish blue and install floor-ceiling navy velvet draperies across the entire window wall...
...and I'd either place the bed on the far right wall so that it faces the window directly - or I'd find a 4-poster bed and put the bed smack in the middle of the room facing the window and place a nice big cabinet behind the bed to create a little dressing area/office space.

The solution is not to paint an accent wall, but to paint the doors.

I got bored at work and decorated your room. The curtains are ikea fabric with a black curtain rod (I think it matches your bedspread quite nicely), and the walls are a sage green. I drew floating shelves above the doors, and then maybe you could display pictures or whatever you have in mind on it (I just copy and pasted some picture frames to put on the shelves), and then placed 2 malma mirrors between the two closet doors.
I think it looks fine w/white doors...what about you?

Matt- if the only reason you are not moving the bed under the windows is so you can see out to the view in the mornings, (not because you can't get to the closet) then move the bed under the window and get a fabulous mirror over a sideboard or dresser that will reflect the view so you see it in the morning, and it will add light to the room, and the feng shui will be better in the room, and you can paint the accent wall behind your bed, which will draw your eye to that wall - and view- when you enter the room, and reflect it when you leave it.
And I second the "Be careful with sage green." suggestion.

I have a very similar situation, and while I toyed with the idea of two accent walls (the window and its facing wall), I'm thinking either completely green (that is, paint the doors) or completely white and rely on curtains/furniture for the color.
I can't help thinking that unless the room is really interesting architecturally or has a v. strong and consistent color scheme, accent walls just make a room look unfinished. But I would be happy to be proven wrong!

I agree with the "paint it all" crowd. If you're going to go sage green, you might look for one that leans more toward yellow than blue. That will keep it less 80's/90's.
Another idea is to remove the closet doors and store them (for rehanging when you move) and hang draperies there instead that match drapes for the window.

Putting the bed under the window will allow you to see the door from the bed, making you feel less vulnerable and thus more relaxed in the room.
And look at this as an opportunity rather than a problem. The large expanses of white in the doors mean that you can use a really bold colour on the walls without overpowering the room. Paint the walls in a rich, luxurious colour, then use an off-white or very pale neutral for the doors, the ceiling, the trim, the bedlinen and the window treatments.

My room is EXACTLY the same as this and I just painted it. I decided to put my bed against the wall opposite of the window though. I just painted the walls grey. Check the out grey rooms in AT blog from a while ago. They definitely inspired me.

Of course everyone has said this, but paint the doors out the same color as the walls so that they blend in. Also, may I suggest something other than sage? You have filtered light and sage will come out looking dingy and grey.

Joining the chorus here: paint the doors the same color as the walls - like in your picture.
Don't put the bed under the window. I am assuming you live in the LA area which means you have to prepare for a substantial earthquake. Most people spend 6-8 hours in their bed every day. That means the odds are highest that you will be in that bed when an earthquake hits. You don't want projectile shards of glass raining down on you if you can help it.
