Good Questions: Black Modern Couch Recommendations?

110708atlagoodquest1.jpgBret is on the hunt for the perfect black couch but is having a hard time finding a black couch in mid-century style:

Dear Apt. Therapy,
Help! Why is it so hard to find a black mid-century modern styled couch? I keep finding great couches that I can afford, however, they usually come in every color BUT black...

110708atlagoodquest1b.jpgI'm looking for something about 7 ft long that resembles either of these couches from Crate & Barrel or Plummers. I don't prefer a specific fabric as long as it's black -- and of course, has sexy legs (wood legs are better)! I have been actively searching the LA craigslist as well as stores in Long Beach and along Beverly Blvd for the past two months. Any help would be much appreciated! -Brett

110708atlagoodquest1c.jpgWe're owners of seating from local mid-century style furnishing shop, Modernica, so we immediately checked their site for a couch that fit your description and found this Split Rail Couch that is available in Chataqua Ebony (100% Nylon), King's Road Onyx (100% Olefin), Spirit Black (Naugahyde Vinyl) or Premium Leather Black.

There are a few other modernist styles available to peruse that come in black upholstery to consider also, but the one above is our personal favourite of the bunch. Anyone else with some suggestions for Brett?

I'm sorry I can't offer you any ideas as to where to get one, but are you absolutely sure you want a black fabric sofa? It will unfortunately collect every single bit of lint and light-colored flotsam in your room and will be hard to keep clean. Even a dark grey will be a more low-maintenance option. Just my two cents...

Good luck!

We have a very dark grey sofa from Ikea (Beddinge) and we are 100% happy with it. It looks almost black. Of course it´s nothing compared to these elegant sofas... it´s "mid-century" for the poor ones :-).

Crate & Barrel has a huge selection of fabrics available for custom order. We did it and while the wait was a bit long, we got the perfect couch. Also they were having a sale on custom orders so the price was not much more than the stocked fabrics.

Also from Eurway:

their costumer service is excellent ,I've ordered a leather sofa from this store ,and 5 days after I placed my order and paid ,I received a coupon for free shipping for anything above $200 ,so I called and within 5 mins they credit me back the $300 for SH&H.The quality of the sofa I bought is pretty good and it is extremely comfortable,it has been 2 yrs and it looks new in spite of the daily abuse by my kids and their friends .

I have to agree with Monica. A black sofa will show every single speck of dust and hair.

whiteonwhite.com has a nice mid century styled sofa in a deep charcoal grey.

Keep in mind: solid black shows dust and hairs, etc...as much as solid white.

How about a Ligne Roset Malhoun Sofa in Black? Should look great. And they are decently priced too.

Black might show dust and lint well, as some have mentioned before, but it always vacuums off well so not a big problem as I see it (I've had a black sofa for the past two years, and looking for a new one at the moment, most likely a black one again).

The Ligne Roset Malhoun might not be mid-centure though, but should go well together with mid-century furniture.

Both mitchell gold and room and board stock at least 2 blacks as special order fabric options on all of their items.

Black sofas are very 80s, not very MCM. That may be why you're having a hard time.

I think you would do better by finding a vitage sofa and having it reupholstered in your own black fabric, plus the quality of the sofa would by better than anything you could get today.

Buy a good vintage frame and have it reupholstered. The cost isn't that bad. And the look is exactly what you look. Follow your own drummer. Leave the past where it is - in museums. I think black upholstery would nicely update & modernize the MCM silhouette. I'm with you. Every time I see a beige/tan/cream/grayish/taupe MCM repro couch, I yawn.

The Ligne Roset Malhoun is a great sofa...but certainly not "decently priced". We priced a sectional at about $12K.

If you're open to leather, this shouldn't be that hard. How about a Barcelona, or if that is to expensive, how about a Barcelona knock-off. The Modernica split rail mentioned above is one example.

Here are several other iconic MCM knockoffs of black leather sofas:

Black fabric is a bit more difficult, but is difficult as many above have mentioned.

Potluck,

$12k certainly isn't cheap, was talking from a UK perspective though, the one I had a look at was around £3k which isn't bad, when our Boconcept sofa cost almost the same tree years ago.

The Corona sofa (color - cafe noir) from of all places Macys may fit the bill. In the photos the cushions look a little more puffy- in person, the couch has very clean lines. And more importantly, is actually comfortable, which a lot of the sofas seem to compromise when it comes to style vs comfort.

I purchased this sofa and love it - their Cafe Noir is very striking, but more of a very dark charcoal (not quite black, but looks lighter in the photos than in person). Worth a look and a steal at $699 (on sale).
