Good Questions: Can You Grow Corn at Home?

2005-10-17-14-09-10-900-cor.jpgHello AT,
I've become enamored with the notacornfield.com project that is growing 30 acres of corn on the edge of downtown Los Angeles near where I live. Can corn be grown as a temporary houseplant. I don't have a balcony but have large North facing windows. Any advise on varieties/ procedures/ resources?

Regards,
Jonathan D.

Hey Jonathan, are thumbs aint green, but a quick google search brought up loads of info, including some corn-growing school projects, so maybe it's not as hard as it sounds.

Anyone else have any suggestions for Jonathan?

LOL
I had the same feeling (about that corn art)
but corn needs LOTS of light.

Easy to sprout between damp paper towels
(we did that school project too)
and if you try it, put some fish in with the seed.

That was the other part of our school thing
(which obviously printed mightily in my mind)
we did a row with a fish "like the native americans did,"
and a row without.
The row *with* the fish (fertilizer) was a foot taller.

Corn also needs other corn to pollinate, so plant more than one lonely stalk and at least two rows if you can....

You might really need a grow light.

I've grown corn in a pot outside & in the soil, and it's not too hard, although my corn never got as high as an elephant's eye. Lots of water & light, but watch out for bug infestations - bugs love corn. I'm not sure if this is the best indoor plant...they can get messy once they start to polinate.

ps
fish suggestion...that kicks in when you are putting the seed in dirt

I do believe I was imprecise

Amanda, I'm not really interested in having it long enough to have it go to seed. I'm more interested in having something that might grow quickly and provide plenty of green foliage and the nice fresh growing corn smell.

Anyone else experimened with corn in lowish light conditions and its use as a houseplant? I grew trays of wheatgrass as a houseplant 25 yrs ago (I didn't have a juicer) and they were gorgeous. I though corn might be a bigger version. Any suggestion?

i planted corn in little styrofoam bowls by my window about three weeks ago... its a very bright cheery green... the bowls.. although i planted far too many seeds in the bowls but i can put them in bigger pots later... the corn now is about 7 inches tall, its been fun to go out every morning to the kitchen and see how they grew while i was sleeping,..
