Good Questions: Chairs For This Table?
Los Angeles

Dear AT, we have a concrete dining table and are in desperate need of chairs. We were thinking the Herman Miller White Eiffel side chairs would match – but would like to put it out there and see what AT thinks HELP!

So what do you think?

I like the white chair/metal combo, but think the fussiness of the table base and chair legs would create a 'ballet dance recital' look. IMHO.

nope. go with wood chairs

not unless you want to change the base -- they simply don't work together on many levels. If you could go with a solid cylindrical base for the table (perhaps a veneered wood), it could work.

I like white to contrast and brighten the dark metal table, but agree with tenderleaf that that the legs and table base combo above is too fussy. So I'd go with white chairs with a simpler base. Ooh, maybe the Saarinen tulip chairs? Same curves as the table. (Although I think they're even pricier than the Herman Miller ones...)

I think the finish of the legs and table base are different enough that they won't look too clashy. That, and the rods of the eiffel bases are so thin compared to the wide metal components of the table, they'll contrast very nicely. I'd be delighted to have such a combo in my own home.

If it doesn't go when you put it together you can always get a table cloth.

eeek, saw the combination and cringed. I like both pieces individually , the modern chair and industrial table, but the shiny thin chrome of the chair base would clash with the wide dark metal strips of the table base.

I agree with the 2nd post, wood chairs with a black stain or walnut. Or maybe black thonet bentwood chairs:

I agree with mschatelaine - you either need a solid base on the table, or on the chairs. I like the wood base for the table idea. But I really don't like the mixing of metals you have with the two different bases on these pieces.

I'd use the Louis Ghost Armchair. I think its lightness in material and color make for a nice contrast to the heavy look of the table, while its shape compliments the table very well.

or if you are stuck on the eiffel chair, get the one with the wooden legs

I don't like the chair legs with that table's base. They argue too much. I'd choose chairs with a much simpler base. If you like the modern white seat, I'd go with something similar to the Knoll Tulip Chair.

I do like the suggestion of the Marais A chair (gunmetal chair) above. Also consider

I would choose leather or upholstery to balance the cold cement and iron.

I have a very similar dining table (except mine is copper - not concrete) and I have these chairs from R&B. They've worked out great.

Seconding caw261, the Enzo chair in ivory leather would be stunning. Contrast(s) of hard and soft, light and dark, round and square would really sing.

The strappy backrest of the PB schoolhouse chair works, I agree with mrs yow, but if it were red, you'd lose the lines against that red wall. Too bad that one is not available in a robin's egg blue or ivory.

Really depends on the rest of the space, but I am not loving the base-to-base comparison in that proposed combo.

I'd actually look at something all one material for the chairs... like something all upholstered, or all leather.

But the Louis Ghost in all Black has a certain hotness potential to it.

the concrete table is unconventional enough. this is a chance to get a collection of iconic chairs going. i'd get different chairs, maybe in the same color, maybe not. maybe ones with same or similar material. maybe some with armrests, some without.
get one or two eiffel chairs. a tulip, a panton, etc. you can even have a high leather loveseat anchor one side of the table.

Personally, I'd go for a more solid chair to contrast with that amazing base- maybe a Panton chairs? Or, perhaps some great, simply upholstered Parsons chairs (in simple linen- to die for). Good luck!

Kristian, you took the words right out of my mouth. Marais. No contest. They could even be kind of cool in yellow or red, but I think the plain metal is probably best.

Ghost chairs could look kinda crazy funky with this too, if you want the focus to be on the table.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Panton chairs in most settings, except this one:

I know I'm supposed to love them, but they just scream "Real World House" to me.

If you're going for an industrial look, what about metal chairs, like the aluminum cafe chair at Target? Or Aeron-like chairs?

i think with the concrete/industrial look, large tree stumps could work. together it would look very castle/renaissance faire, if you are into that.

Ick, not a good match at all.

That table doesn't look even remotely modern to me -- the scale and the use of barrel-hoops keeps saying French Directoire style to me. I might try for a streamlined klismos style chair in a dark color, if it were me, in the hopes of bridging the eras.

More on klismos chairs -- wrong colors, but right scale match: http://flickr.com/photos/8230585@N06/3217974087/

A search on "Napoleon dining chairs" also brought up some more good candidates -- but ones that would be fussier and much more old-fashioned than you are probably seeking.

scoremeny--

Awesome call on the Klismos style for this table.

My favorite modernized version is Donghia's take:

No, no, no! Too fussy with both metal bases. Go with something simple... Like unstained wood chairs. =)

it's a disturbing table: I mean that in a great way... Kartell plastic, like the louis ghost, but in any of their styles and colors (especially colors) would raise the stakes even more... what a fun problem

Wouldn't do chairs...chunky, slightly oversized in the seat wooden stools would go so much better.
