Good Questions: Chairs in the FLOR Catalogue?
Los Angeles

031109plywood-chair.jpgA few months ago I was thumbing through a FLOR catalogue and came across an image that had this pair of molded plywood chairs upholstered in an Eames dot pattern fabric. I contacted FLOR to ask if they knew where the chairs came from and they then told me that they use actual customers homes in their photography and this particular person found them in a vintage furniture shop. Anyone seen them elsewhere? Thanks! - Albert

The chairs in the catalog have four legs though instead of a singular base, so they must have modified that somehow. Maybe that was a custom change in addition to the upholstery?

the tops definitely look like the Mulhauser - but i've never seen them with four-leg bases - they usually have the single swivel base, like an Eames lounge chair. maybe it's been frankensteined? i like it though - makes me want to modify mine!

I have the same chair (different upholstery though) with the four legs instead of a swivel base so I don't think it was a custom change. The Ebay listing said it was George Mulhauser for Plycraft as well.

The only additions I have to make re: these chairs is that I have seem them listed from $600 through an EBay auction about 12 months ago to over $1500 with either new or well-maintained original vinyl or fabric upholstery.
Since first finding this Plycraft chair through the FLOR catalog and on EBay I have had a difficult time finding online since; as these postings note, the Mulhauser lounge chair with the swivel base is more commonly collected or at least written about. However, I believe this stationary version does sit a bit higher, which remedied my only real peeve about the lounger.
Love the tufted seats. The fabric on the catalog samples is an Eames created design from Maharam and not original to the chairs -- vinyl was the norm. If you find a few, let me know! I think they're great, too.

Huh, I guess I'll consider myself lucky that we got ours for around $400, in good condition with the original vinyl too. It's a great chair, wonderfully comfortable and well worth seeking out. Good luck with finding it!

Albert,

I commend you on your good taste, these chairs are desirable! If you are still looking than you are in luck, because I have a pair w/ th same base. The base was designed by Norman Cherner (another plycraft designer) but was used on a very smale scale on some George Mulhauser designs. Albert, if you or anyone else is interested you many contact me at: radmodern@yahoo.com.
