Good Questions: Ethnic Table, Modern Chairs?

120308Indiantable.jpgI'm fairly happy with the living room of my 1910 house with a modern interior. I may darken the green paint a bit at some point to a mossy tone, but I love the lightness. What doesn't work is the dining area. The faux fireplace and bad tile is its own issue, but I LOVE the table. It is a turn-of-the-century Indian piece. I could switch it out or change to another seating area (we don't use it much to eat, but I do not ever want to sell it, which entails getting a storage space. Can I integrate the table into a more eclectic/midcentury room (Angela Adams kenga rug, pineapple lamp table, Bertoia large diamond chair) by adding chairs which contrast in an effective way? And if so....which chairs??? Many many thanks! -Elizabeth

Elizabeth, your query immediately made us think of our neighbor down the street: Maria's “Oh So You” Bungalow. In her case, she married a modern-minimal table with ethnic seating, and we think it came to be some of the finest details of her home, as the contrast between simple and ornate amplified each piece. In a similar sense, marrying a modern and simple chair against a traditionally ornate and ethnic table could look equally fantastic.

120308Indiantable2.jpgOur vote would be for the Kartell Victoria Ghost Chair, which gives a hint of the ornate and traditional, but is also transparent, giving the detailed table center stage.

If you don't find chairs that work with it, I recommend selling it rather than paying to store it.

i think it would be a great play on contrast to add some ultra modern white chairs... similar to the IKEA (Gilbert?) chair... at whatever price point you're into, something along those same design lines

and i def second the idea of the ghost chair

Just to play devil's advocate, are you sure you really like MCM? That table you love is the antithesis of spare clean lines. Maybe what you really need to make your rooms "go" together is more ethnic eccentricity in your living room?

I think a simple metal chair would look great with the silver painted legs. Something like the Navy-style chair perhaps?

i'm not sure if the bertoia side chair would be too much bertoia for you, but it would work with your table, particularly in chrome. instead of plain cushions, you could use indian fabric.

you might try the eames wire chair (in chrome) or molded chairs (your color choice) with an eiffel base, also in chrome.

Call me crazy, but I'm thinking Panton S chairs might look fabulous—simple, unfussy lines but definitely modern. Of course, I'm all for "reproductions," which is why I love whiteonwhite.com

Whatever you do, don't go with Starck Ghost chairs—they would literally disappear against that table, and not in a good way.

Just my 2¢.

Before the jump I was going to suggest the ghost chairs myself. With a cushion...for practicality's sake. Definitely something sleek, avoid metals, and keep the backs open or light-the table's heaviness already grounds the area.

I think what makes this table stand out is its weight -- heavy legs, heavy and thick top. I like the impulse of the clear chairs, but I think the faux-Georgian shape of these would be one more style distraction in the room.

Could you stand to do a bright-colored stool like this one: http://www.designpublic.com/shop/staach/9971 ? With a bright sky blue or candy pink or mint green cushion, that could be the simple, eclectic touch you need, although using stools for dining-table seating may not be ideal.

I just watched Darjeeling Limited last night on TV, so my Indian-inspired color palettes are popping right now!

I think that the Arne Jacobsen Series 7 Chair in white would look amazing with your table.

What about two sleek benches for side seating (maybe with either Indian-inspired or modern-print fabric cushions?), something like the ones at Room & Board:

And hold off on getting the chairs for the head and foot until something grabs your fancy as much as the table has.

I also think the Ghost chairs would look amazing, though ... tough call. Good luck; I'm sure whatever you decide will look fantastic!

What about painting the chairs dark green? I think they are very nice, IMO.

I actually don't mind your existing chairs. Maybe you could decoupage some Indian fabric or decorative paper (craft store) or some embossed paper painted silver like the metal-work on the tabgle legs in the recessed squares on the chair backs, to tie the look together.

I like a mix of contemporary, MCM and ethnic, too -- I call it "global contemporary". It's much more interesting than getting stuck in one time warp!

These are great ideas- apparently you all know me so well. I actually own the Ghost chair- it's currently in use in the master bedroom as a bedside table (works really nicely there) so I can easily test it out. I also already own a full set of Bertoia side chairs, but they're staying in the kitchen. Stools and benches would be brilliant but not sure about the comfort factor.
The existing chairs are going up for sale! Thanks again, Elizabeth

Keep the table and lighten everything up with lighter weight and/or WHITE chairs. You could also integrate white benches. They key is to show off the table, and the chairs just hide it.

Jacobsen or Panton, both in white.

Elizabeth - Could you please tell me what green paint that is? I've been looking for something like that. Thanks for any info.

I also think the Series 7 chairs in white would look great (and not just because I've been dreaming about them for years...).
The chairs you have right now are so heavy and they take aways the focus from the lovely table.

Another idea, if you do not really need the tabel as a dinning table but want to keep it: use it as an office table if you have the space. I like dinning tables as office tables and that way you could pare it with a great minimalist office chair.

As for the devils advocate: how boring is it to have furniture just from one style in your home! Mixing styles might be a bit harder to do but I like it much more then just one style in a home.

Nina79- I'm not suggesting everything should be the same style. I'm suggesting that MCM has become the default option -- everyone under 40 has the same 10 chairs from the same 3 stores. It's worth asking whether the homeowner actually LIKES Pantone/Bertoia/Ghost chairs, or is merely going along with the trend when he/she would really be happier with another look.

I would suggest buying benches instead of chairs, something minimal that will showcase the table instead of drawing attention to themselves.

HI...

I got a question. I am designing a line of new chairs.
I have been making samples with Rattan...
I was trying to do something different with Rattan...
These chairs would retail for about 200-250.

Now I am thinking what would people buy more....
Rattan or Wire Chairs?

Please give me your thoughts on what you would buy?
