Good Questions: European Street signs for sale?

DSC00671.jpgAn email from Waylon:
I am working on decorating my wall. I thought of this really great idea to have a couple of walls themed for places I want to go. One of them is London. The signature street signs for such famous streets as Savile Row (where the bespoke suit tailors live), Downing Street (most notably #10 where the UK Prime Minister lives), Jermyn Street (where the bespoke shirt makers live), etc. My question is, are these available anywhere in either replica form or some other form of metal signage similar to the old vintage Coke and Ford signs?

Unfortunately we haven't seen a source, but perhaps one of our AT:LA readers knows of one? By the looks of it, they don't look like they would be too hard to DIY them yourself... Or perhaps you could mount some black and white photographs of the street signs or locations in stead of the actual signs? Anyone have any other ideas?

Click my name for a link. I think I've seen some on ebay, too.

I do like the idea of photos, though. . .

i've been doing similar eBay searches for new orleans related signage. if you're looking for specific authentic (or authentic-looking) signs, get ready for the long haul and expect to end up paying overseas shipping.

it will probably be much easier to find general london or UK signage rather than specifically looking for "Downing Street".

I purchased actual London Underground tube signs in the late 80's as they were ripping out the old metal ones from the tube system and updating them with more modular, harder to graffiti signs.

You might want to contact the London Transport Museum (where I got mine) and ask who to contact about replica street/district signs. They can probably point you in the right direction... but yes, be prepared -- mine are HEAVY and would have been costly to ship.

You might ask the Brits at Kings Head Pub in Santa Monica, or the Cat & The Fiddle in Hollywood (if it's still around). Or maybe a prop house for the studios - sometimes they sell (not just loan out) pieces.

I can't imagine that these would be too hard to find to be honest. I live in London and see this type of thing all ove the place in stalls selling to tourists. So if you have a friend heading over, you might ask them to check it out. Another option might be to contact the local councils directly (sort of like the borough system in nyc). Almost all the famous street signs are in Westminster. Here is their site: http://www.westminster.gov.uk/

Replica signs are sold at the tourist shops in London. If you don't know anyone going over there, you can buy signs online at fancythatoflondon.co.uk and londontaxitour.com

I too live in London and an American friend of mine recently set up a business that imports these sorts of things to the US. You can check out her website at: http://www.ukgoodies.com/products.php
