Good Questions: Furniture Making Classes?

cerritos-04-06-.jpgHello AT,
I am a design and furniture fan. I have made several designs in my sketch pad for dream furniture that I would love make for my home one day. I found an article on your site on how to make a headboard, which I did - and it was so rewarding. Here's my question. Are there any places in the LA area that you know of and/or can recommend that teach furniture making? I am not looking to get a degree or anything - but who knows - this could be a career change. I would love to know the basics and maybe a little more of furniture making, how to refinish and upolster. Thank you for your help!

Hey Geraldine- a little google search gave us Cerritos College which seems to have a bunch of cool classes. We don't personally know anything about them, but if anyone else out there does...

I would LOVE an answer to this question too. Plus, is there anything more local to central or West LA than Norwalk? (I'm a transplanted New Yorker. Never got a driver's license...)

OTIS college of art and design have woodworking/furniture making classes in their continuing edu program.

The campus where these classes are held {they have 2 locations] is on Lincoln just past LAX

expensive classes but have had good instructors/small classes/good working equipment. which I would expect a community college not to have as much.

You might also want to look into Art Center in Pasadena. I know they offer furniture design as part of their Art Center At Night program. Their classes are small and their equipment is top-notch. Long Beach State might also offer furniture as part of their extended ed program?

Thank you very much - I will look into Oris & Art Center. What would be great would be to have a one day a week "apprenticeship" with a working furniture maker, but I'll definatley start with a class.
Also - the link to the headboard (on the NY Apartment Therapy site) is : http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/ny/081505/how-to/how-to-build-your-own-headboard-003559
