Good Questions: Good Moving Company?

p0001332.jpgAn email from Sarah: I am moving from KoreaTown to Glendale next month and I was wondering if someone could recommend a reasonable and reputable moving company who would handle a small move like that. I only have about one room worth of furniture but it's packed pretty full with books, clothes and art supplies. I've heard lots of shady stories about moving scams and I'd appreciate some feedback on who to call and who to stay away from!

Hi Sarah, AT has some movers that were recommended by our readers in the "services" tab on the right side of the page (below "products"). Look under "movers & storage." Does anyone have any recent "good" movers experiences to share?

Whatever moving company you choose, just STAY AWAY from AIR-RIDE Moving & Storage, based in Granada Hills, CA. They are scam artists!

I went through the nightmare of movers dropping the ball on me and not even showing up! whatever you do make sure you get a contract for instances like this. I apoligize for not remembering who this was, but it was a mover on craigslist.

I cannot speak highly enough about the Delancey Street moving company, part of a foundation that combines job training with a pretty intense social living contract for ex-users and -offenders. We moved three people from two locations -- Korea Town and Long Beach -- to Silverlake back in April and the three guys we had were the most amazing movers I have EVER had (and between two of us, we'd moved cross country six times in as many years). They're a non-profit, prices are very reasonable, and while I can see how some folks might be concerned about the guys' pasts, it was the safest I've ever felt with any service types being in my home.

I second Shana on the Delancey Street Foundation. I have used them twice, after hearing only praise from several friends, and I couldn't have been more pleased. Reasonable prices that go to help a worthy cause. And I, too, felt quite comfortable with the movers themselves. I'll definitely use them again.

Gregory and I used Load Rock-N-Roll about two years ago and were very pleased with their service.

I used axel wieland when I moved in oct, on a friend's recommendation. he was a landlord and used axel a lot to move large furniture. I also recommended him to a friend who recently moved and she was also very pleased with him. he's professional, fast and reasonable. 310-403-5443

I had a great experience with Delancey Street 2 years ago, and a not-so-great experience with them about 9 months ago. It seems to depend on which crew they send out - some are clearly better than others. It wasn't a disaster, but the 2nd crew I dealt with wasn't nearly as professional as the first, and there was a bit of damage to a favorite wardrobe. YMMV.

Starving Students is wonderful. They're not really starving students; it's a corporation and they are very professional. It's a local-boy-makes-good story and they pride themselves on great service and prices.

I've used Popeye Moving and Storage twice and was really impressed. I highly recommend them. They're BBB members, too.

I made a small move of my studio in Silver Lake to a one bedroom in Palms (to be closer to my office - the hour plus commutes were killing me!) and I used A Better Way to Move after seeing their listing in the Better Business Bureau's website. They were awesome and incredibly courteous. They showed up on time for the pickup and early on the drop off at the new place. I'd hire them again in a second.

We recently moved and had a fabulous experience with Happy Heifer Movers. They were the hardest working movers I've ever had - and nice and respectful of our things.

I FULLY agree with Shana and Kathleen- Delancey Street Movers are BY FAR the best movers we have ever had- quick, careful, hardworking, professional, and they came in UNDER estimate! It is also for a GREAT cause!

Stay away from All American Movers located in Tarzana. I actually just hire day laborers nowadays.
