Good Questions: Help Me Upholster My New Sofa!
Los Angeles

081108_gq.jpgAT reader Liz is needing some help deciding on fabric colors...She writes: I just bought this sofa off of Craigslist. I love the sofa but it needs new upholstery. The problem is, I can't decide on a fabic. I have looked (online) at mood, fabricguru and pretty much anywhere else I could find. I have swatches...

I have no furniture in the living room, so there is no color scheme to match. I'm leaning toward blue/brown and have been looking at blue fabric since I would like the frame of the sofa to stand out. My style is eccletic (danish mod, Hollywood Regency ish)

Any suggestions?

Dear Liz,
We love the shape of your new sofa! Depending on how daring you want to go, we could definitely see this sofa upholstered in a bold, modern graphic pattern (ie, sort of like how Anthropologie has been pairing classic sofas and using Marimekko fabric to update it), but there's also something to be said about choosing a beautiful color so all the details of the sofa really stand out. Based on your style description, it might be interesting to pair your traditional French style sofa with an unexpected shade of blue (or teal, or fuschia)! Anyone else have any suggestions for Liz?

A solution that's often employed to update sofas like these is to balance the feminine lines with a masculine upholstery. Perhaps a menswear-inspired tone-on-tone pinstripe in teal/navy or charcoal/slate would work? You could paint the frame in a contrasting color (light frame/dark upholstery or vice versa) to give it a tailored look and keep it fresh with vibrant throw pillows.

That frame is so beautiful, It's unlike what I tend to be drawn to... but I would love to see it in a textured canvas like neutral, the contrast of the light fabric with the dark frame would be really great. Then you could do great pillows and a bold wall color, like a deep plum. I love the idea of a bold modern fabric with the sofa, but I think you'll look at it in a couple years and wish you didn't do it. I am so jealous, that sofa is sweet!

oh, please don't paint the frame! I say that you should definitely go bold. I especially like the idea of a bright blue or teal.

I also think a bold pattern would look good at first, but you'd get rapidmy fed up with it. The frame is sufficently ornamental in itself, a simple colored fabric would make it stand out. You can always place pillows and throws to change the mood. I personally think it would be gorgeous in white.

Pink or Coral Velvet with White vinyl welts and buttons for the tufting - rather than the channels on the wings, I'd have the entire back button tufted.
