ATLA reader, Alexis3, wrote us the other day about overhead lighting in her apartment. She specifically was asking about Pottery Barn's Sectional Architect Lamp.
Hi ATLA! Since I don't have ceiling lighting In my rental apartment, I'm looking for a floor lamp that can extend over my couch rather then up against the wall. I also don't want to feel like I have to crouch down every time I sit on the couch. I was in Pottery Barn the other day and saw the Sectional Architect floor lamp and it looks like it may do the trick since it's adjustable. Have any AT readers bought this lamp? If so, how are they liking it? It's a bit more then I'd like to spend at $299, but I would go for it if I read some good reviews. Thanks!!"

I was looking at the same lamp but decided to go w/ a similar one at West Elm. It's $50 cheaper and I liked the darker colored base. However, it doesn't have the flexibility of motion of the PB one.

I bought this lamp I absolutely love it I was also leery because of the price, but it works well over my couch you can adjust it higher or lower and it really lights up the place. It defintely was the solution for lack of ceiling lighting. Just make sure if you do buy it to get the correct shade, there is a shade just for this lamp it has an opening on the top so the shade can slide on the base, the sales clerk gave me the wrong lamp shade and it caused a bit of confusion and wasted time running back and forth to the store, but the purchase was well worth it. Good luck

Unfortunately, I've had the worst luck with this Pottery barn architect's lamp. It's pretty clear why it's discontinued. It has broken twice in the same place and in the same fashion. The top half comes crashing down and the metal is actually separated. The first time this happened, I thought perhaps the positioning angle over my table was putting too much stress at a certain point. King of Prussia PB was kind to replace the lamp frame. This time I angled it using my engineering background in a position that distributed the stress more evenly. Sadly, about 3 months later, it broke again, it approximately the same way. I think the problem is that I never changed the position, so perhaps you should re-angle the lamp periodically to get it used to a new stress point. Both times this happened spontaneously in the middle of the night.
