Ivana needs some ideas:
Hello AT, I've just moved to my new studio apartment last month and was hooked with your website. I need suggestions on how to decorate my studio because this is the first time ever I'm living by myself. I am also contemplating whether I should try to partition my bed from the rest of the apartment. My worries are that the room may look too small if I partition it, and that anyway I don't really have a lot of friends coming over anyway. I also like to keep the space open because I have a dog who spends most of the day at home.
I'm definitely going to hang some pictures around my bed but just have not had the time to paint a painting myself. Any suggestion on colors/ easy partitioning/ what furniture to put where/ what furniture I should get?

I would put my guest sitting area where you have the bed and the bed where you have the sitting area. That way it gives you the illusion of a living room. People generally do not walk in and see the bedroom first. Then figure out the type of partition to semi hide or hide the bed.
I agree with Lucy and AT. Moving the bed to the back would be my first suggestion, but then I'd partition off the bed with maybe a bookcase (with no back that you can see through) or even a room divider (or two) that you can see through (West Elm has some examples of what I'm talking about). You could potentially use the current bookcase that you have now and make a little cubby-like space for the bed. Since it's so short, it wont close up the space, but you could put some tall vases or reeds or tall anything really on top of it to create a bit more segregation.
Hi Lucy and peytOn,
Thanks for the ideas. I was considering putting the bed to the back when I was moving in. However, at the back there's also a huge glass door that open up to the balcony. I currently place my desk there because I love to have some natural light while sitting on my desk.
Do you guys think it will be weird if I put the bed where the coach currently is?
Other than the placing of my furniture, any other ideas on what I need to work on? ie. what kind of decorations to put in my apartment?
I've always been a practical kind of person and I never bought any vase/other decorations.. SO ideas will be v much appreciated
thanks
Ivana
You will have to keep changing things up until you find the arrangement that you like. I have lived in my studio for 6 years and its just this year that I finally found the sweet spot for my bed. I suggest you do this before buying any new furniture that way you won't get anything that won't fit later.
Not being able to see that glass door makes it hard to make a judgement call. But if its the normal type sliding glass door you could put your desk on one side of the door leaving enough space for the door to slide open and peeople to walk in and out.
I really like that your walls are already a nice light blue! I suggest getting a bunch of differently sized frames (Ikea sells really cheap and REALLY adorably colored frames) and just clustering them on a part of a wall.
Also maybe invest in some wall shelves, they're a great way to store knick knacks and small items without taking up counter/bookshelf/or table space and they double as wall decoration.
Hi All,
Thanks for the ideas. I'll really look into it and appreciate it.
Lucy,
Yup that's what I did: put the table to one side. Click on my name and you can see the other side of my studio.
You could turn the bed the other way, so the length of the bed is on the wall with the door, then put some colorful pillows on the bed against both walls to make a loungy type of area (Domino magazine had a picture of this idea in their July/August 2006 issue on page 152). Put a paper lantern over the bed and lounge about. I agree with Lucy, though--I have a studio too, and I keep moving things around according to what feels right. Enjoy your new place!
Ive also just bought a studio flat, As my flat is about 25 years old and everything is the same as when it was built. I´m trying to do it up little my little instead of having the kitchen seperated opening it up with an arch way and breckfast bar. I have built round the terrace to make the flat bigger but still looks as though its seperated from everything else so was going to put another arch way in there as well. And I think the wall storing is perfect you need to keep all the floor space clear, but not just plain white cupboards some funky differnt shaped ones to add some atmosphere in the room. Im just stuck on clours!
