Good Questions: Identify This Table?
Los Angeles

100208_gqpottery.jpgI need this table! But I can't find it anywhere, I would love to have your readers help.

Thanks!
Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

That table is in fact the Bedford Project Table Set from Pottery Barn. We've had our eye on it ever since it came out a few years ago, but the price tag keeps us at bay (about $1,000 for this set up that includes 2 3x3 bookcases and the table top). However, it has inspired us to design an Ikeahack using modified Expedit bookcases and a custom table top for our own workspace--if it turns out to be a success, we'll definitely do a post on it.

It's from Pottery Barn.

pottery barn, studio table or something. I think three years ago. You won't find it new but maybe used.

Pier 1 also used to carry a table like this. I've been on the hunt for it for my craft room.

If 1,000 is too steep and you are looking for a table that is similar, with storage on the side, the Ikea 2009 catalog showcases a table called the Vika Gruvan/Vika Fagerlid with bookshelf legs. I'm thinking I might grab that one instead.

You could get a local carpenter to make one out of MDF for probably $100-125 materials labor.

It's a perfect table for sewing, too. I have never seen it, but I have made my own tables using a variety of components. Currently I use a twin bed that has a headboard & a footboard of the same height, with a hollow core door on top.
I have also used a combination of filing cabinets and shelving topped with a home-made top made from particle board. I have also used adjustable legs from IKEA with a hollow core door on top.

That one is extremely expensive, but Target has a very similar project desk for half the price.

This would be a great DIY. I bet it could be done for so much cheaper. PBarn is such a rip.

Pier One, it was a Summer/Spring item. I was going to buy, but it was too big for my project room. Very heavy. Probably would be on clearance if you can find it. Was originally $499, if I remember correctly. Came in black & white.

What about two Billy bookcase from Ikea at each end and have a piece of mdf like bepsf mentioned, paint all white or even paint the back interior of bookcases a fun color like orange or turquoise and place bins on the shelves to organize everything-

LoriSF, you beat me to it. I was going to say it would be super easy, especially from Ikea, to buy two bookcases and put a tabletop over them. I would never pay 1,000 or even 200 for something I could make myself for very little.

I have ordered this from Pottery Barn and I was incredibly disappointed by it. It was poorly made, in comparison to the outrageous price. It can absolutely be a DIY - my husband made one out of real wood (instead of the MDF the Pottery Barn one is made of) for a fraction of the price. We even added baskets from Target to make "drawers" on one side for small supplies.

that Target price is for the top only....you still have to buy the bookcases! Still, it's a good price.
