Good Questions: Organic and Affordable Guest Mattresses?
Los Angeles

061509atlareaderquest.jpgDear Apartment Therapy, I'm looking for alternatives to air mattresses, and was hoping the AT community could help me out. Etsy, seller Monikaw7602 offers my dream mattress: all organic, all natural, beautiful design. Unfortunately, the $1700 mattress is out of my price range. I'm in Las Vegas and want to know if anyone out there know where I can get something like the dream mattress above, or even sleeping caravan style mattresses, for guests to sleep on at a price more attuned to my budget? Appreciate your help! -Jessica

Jessica, I received a wonderful king-sized bedset (including mattress & box springs) through Freecycle. I know it's not guaranteed, but it's worth a try.

The only place I can think of, if they have mattresses, would be this catalog store, Gaiam. Maybe check out websites from a national "green" brand (seventh generation or tom's of maine, off the top of my head) and see if they have any useful links. The magazine "natural home" once had an article on mattresses. Other that that I don't know. I get mine from ikea cause that's what I can afford.

I swear by my Japanese futon. It rolls up, so it stays out of the way when I don't need it. When I lived in a small room, I kept it rolled up against the wall during the day, and it was a nice casual seat. Otherwise, you could stick it behind a desk or in a wide closet. The ones at J-Life International are 100% cotton, and the twin is less than $200.

Not to sound like too much like a walking commercial, it's the best mattress for my finicky back I've ever found. And, bonus, come moving day I can carry my entire bed out to the truck all on my own. :)

What about a Japanese futon?

Like J Life International sells: http://www.jlifeinternational.com/houseitems/futon/futon_e.html

Or a Japanese style kapok/wool futon from

I'm pretty sure they're not organic or anything, but IKEA mattresses are made without any toxic or outgassing kinds of things according to their lit. they range from very inexpensive to about the same or more as a major brand mattress

White Lotus - main store in NJ, but does mail order and also links to associated organic bedding stores on their retail locations page. I'd be willing to bet a lot of these places would also do a custom order if they don't have exactly what you want.

Futon! They roll up for easy storage. Much nicer than an air mattress :) Don't know about organic, I'm sure that is an option though.

All-natural futons at very low prices.
Full size starting at $175.

And many Ikea mattresses have heavily outgassing synthetic foam. If you go that route and you're looking for clean air I'd be careful about specifics.
