AT reader Jamie writes in with a question about painting their rooftop patio to compliment their stunning [emanating envy] view of the Hollywood Hills:
"We have a great rooftop patio with views of the hollywood sign, griffith observatory and franklin hills. But something about it seems off. I think we need to paint the bright white walls to allow them to sort of fade into the view, then eventually add some great potted plants, etc..."
"Right now there are three white stucco walls and one black metal wall that are about 3 feet high. I've attached some photos, what paint colors would work in this scenario? And what type of paint?"

wow... what a problem to have! gorgeous.
what kind of feel are you going for, how is this space used?

Do off-shore breezes make the patio too cold? Use warm shades to match the hills.
Is it too hot most of the year? Color it in cool shades such as sky or concrete.
Is it mostly used at night? Stick with white.
To make it blend in, use a sponge to create a colorscape showing what would be seen if the walls were made of frosted glass. Take photographs and blow them up to get the blurry look.

Me thinks it looks great as is, a little bit more modern that if you painted it... BUT THAT'S JUST ME; probably out there there are forces that will want to oppose me in such an important matter. Please don't come with your college degree on color theory and pattern swatches... they hurt. :(

Is that the CB2 patio set (or some other lounge set) and what do you think of it?
Our walls on our rooftop deck are a soft blue, but I would love gray especially with your white cushions.

I think I would paint it a dark grey or charcoal...

right now the lighter painted wall catches your eye almost before the view...

Wonderful view! I am jealous. I think an organic color picked from the hills would compliment it nicely. Perhaps a light sage green or ochre.

I would paint it a light, earthy gray.

I would think that dark grey or charcoal would totally absorb the heat and will make your deck feel hotter. I'd probably go with a light grey.

I would go with an adobe or a taupe color. They are natural to California style and your white furniture will pop, especially against the taupe. Yet it will not take away from your view like bright colors will.
The view should be what catches the eye.
