Good Questions: Scrabble Rugs?

112408scrabblerug.jpgLast year, Grace posted about a giant Scrabble rug that was as reasonably priced as it was quirky. I just stumbled on the post today while researching new rugs and, as an incurable Scrabble geek I was tempted... for a minute. The rug was pretty fabulous... but huge. I live in a small NY apartment, and it would take up the entire room...

Got a good question you'd like answered? Send your queries and a good image or two here and we'll see if the ATLA team or our readers can help you out.

If the traditional colors weren't so hideous I might consider it (imagine a Scrabble rug with burgundy/red background as the dominant board color, with jewel toned purples and/or greens and/or blues as the double and triple point tiles).

So, my questions are:
1. Do you know if anyone makes a reasonably priced small Scrabble rug that function as a funky entry doormat or a bathmat, or maybe just a slightly larger rug that could add a bit of playfulness to a small corner of a living room without taking over the whole space?

and, if not, then:

2. Can anyone suggest a DIY way to make a Scrabble rug -- preferably in colors I prefer that actually work with the furniture I already have?

Thanks!
Jennifer

In regards to a welcome mat inspired by Scrabble, we remember this Jeni Rodger's "Your Welcome Mat", but we can't seem to find anything in our archives or online about any other fullsize rug. Perhaps this would be a good time to visit the FLOR showroom and purchase carpet tiles, stencil your own designs and put together your own Scrabble rug.

If this was Top Design, Margaret Russell's head would be about ready to explode...

Yeah, I know -- the huge Scrabble rug is ugly. That's why I asked for suggestions about how to design my own Scrabble-inspired rug in more attractive colors. Or, whether anyone knows of a small-sized Scrabble rug, since it wouldn't be so ugly as a bathmat or doormat.

As for the Jeni Rogers word-game welcome mat, where can that be purchased? There doesn't seem to be any purchase price on her website.

Thanks in advance.

Do they make pieces big enough to play scrabble on the rug?

That would make for a fun party.

could possibly work for a minute with young 20-somethings in an uber-ironic-kiddieregressive studio or loft. Very easy to grow out of, or to regret purchasing-under-influence. Better to look for other accessories with the colors you have in mind, and haul the game out for your most beloved sesquipi

I dunno I like Scrabble as much as the next guy but a good board game, video game, movie ect. doesn't translate into good home decor.

Why not try to mount the game up on the wall and see how you like it on a smaller scale before purchasing a major piece of floor covering with it? My guess is it's gimmick would wear off quickly.

Nesagwa: For some odd reason, they don't sell large pieces for it. You'd think they would because, really, what's the use of a huge scrabble rug without huge scrabble pieces? (That's easy to DIY though, with tiles or paper.)

Karen H: That's why I don't want to buy the big rug - it would get old very quickly.

Buffalogirl: I don't like the color scheme at all, so mounting it on the wall won't help The rug as sold is only about $100, which is cheap for a rug. But I don't want something that big.

I'd like to make something similar but MUCH smaller, in shades of maroon/wine. I just don't know how.

Does no one have any DIY bathmat-making or small-rug-making tips? I figured you all were way craftier than I am, from reading past "good questions."

I love scrabble too. When I first glanced at the rug I thought it was cool and I wanted it. Where would I put it? No where. It got old before I even bought it.

It would be easier to do a scrabble homage with color paper, an ink jet printer, and frames.

i LOVE scrabble. i play with a group of other fanatics at border's books on monday nights.
that rug however is tacky and would never make it's way into my home...irregardless of the color scheme.

If you google "scrabble quilt" there are some interesting options that might translate to a rug. There are several patterns that you could substitute cloth for carpet samples. Maybe pick up a carpet sample book?

Maybe consider a floorcloth rather than a rug? Could be hung later on, if you so desire, or simply just rolled and put in a closet. Failing that, there used to be an old technique of rugmaking using long bits of fabric, a hook and burlap, but i'll be damned if I can remember what it's called - I just remember finding it insanely difficult when my grandmother tried to show me.

maybe use Flor tiles (cut to size) to make something similar/more pleasing to your taste?

Thanks, Jakelegs, Anaximander and Grumpy Girl. I'll look into those ideas.

Thanks for your comments about my Welcome Mat ;)
Unfortunately it is not in production to purchase, just trying to get someone interested!
