ATLA reader and recent house tour participant, Marisa, is searching for 2 side tables for her sofa and needs your help.
"After a year of furnishing my place, I am stuck on what to do with my living room area. Because of the limited space I want everything to be multi-functional, clean and light. I'm not sure whether I should get something that doubles as side tables and extra seating (ideally a great X-base stool) or a wingback. My style is mid century and light to give the space room to breathe. Any ideas on something that won't break my bank and work with my style?"
Marisa also loves pops of color and incorporates red, yellow, orange, blue into her condo via pictures (both personal snapshots and purchased artwork), accessories and cushions. To visit Marisa's house tour and see more of her style,

How about this little pop of red?

It's not multifunctional, I guess, but I think it would work in the room and it's totally affordable.

If you care for wood, maybe the InModern Rekindle Side / End Table could work or the Intown low stool. You can find them at http://www.designpublic.com and they are on sale.

this could work, and take a look at the rest of conran's choices...i liked the luna, ella and vira.
love the pale grey? barcelona chair on the conran site(but $$$$) for additional seating, but don't know if it's too large for your space. below is a link with craigs listings for barcelona chair/ottoman.

i think a rough hewn stool, out of teak or some other sustainable wood would actually be a nice contrast to the contemporary. you can find them at the "wooden duck" in Berekely.

How about ceramic garden stools, since you already have the indoor-outdoor thing going on?

Ikea stool. Cheap and plentiful. Stack a couple up as a side table.
too cheap?

Why not get a pair of vintage end tables from Craigslist?
Take something like these:

...spray paint them white and maybe add a little gold paint to highlight the grooves and you'd have a great Hollywood Regency look, and some valuable storage too.

Marisa (or anyone else) - where is that couch from? Love it. Thanks.

Since it looks like there are plenty of color punches already in the room, what about something like Crate & Barrel's C table? Stainless steel, so it works with anything. Might be too spendy for you though. You could also go with a cheaper black C table from cb2.

Your coffee table is waaaaay too big for your space.

I would trade in the table for somethign smaller, and clear acrylic or glass. I like the oval shape -- I'd stick with that that. You might try two small tables side by side. [I have the same sofa from Roomand Board, and a table about 1/2 as wide as the sofa would be more to scale I think].
As for side tables, I think something that doubles as storage would be great. Do you need extra seating? You don't say whether you entertain often. Extra seating could be as simple as moving dining chairs into the living space when you need them (I keep a dining chair in an office nook and move it to the dining table when I need the seat).

What about a saarinen tulip side table? getting the authentic one might be a bit financially difficult, but there are imitations out there.

Where is that rug from? I love it!
The other day at Target I saw this small version of hte Saarinen table that would be perfect for a side table, plus it was on clearance for under $18 each!
Here's the link:

Another suggestion, have you considered painting the top of your coffee table? The contrast with the white walls, frames and the rug with it's white elements makes me feel the room is a bit cold. Perhaps a dark navy, a rich orange or a dark red? Just a thought.

i'm obsessed with the yellow Trollsta side tables
Is that the Loring sofa from Room and Board by chance? I've considered purchasing it for a couple months now, but they don't have a show room in Arizona, and I'm wondering how comfortable it is.
