Haley sent us a few photos of his new West Hollywood studio apartment with a few questions, most notably about a place to "sit and eat":
As you can see, I am in the process of moving into a tiny studio in WeHo. The pictures show that I still have a lot of work to do, I realize this. If it weren’t for my almost non-existent budget, things would be happening a little differently, meaning I would be indulging in some of the finer DIY’s. Actually, I would probably would be in a bigger apartment but that’s beside the point. Projects excite me. Most of my furniture has had a personal touch added in one way or another, if it wasn’t built from scratch in the first place. I love working with wood, metal, paint, canvases, fabric, paper, you name it. As for the bed area, the lighting, the kitchen, etc., my plans are almost in action..
Good Questions: Small Space Rustic Dining?
The only area I am having trouble with, is a place to sit and eat. I was hoping to stumble across a small, rustic, wood bar table at some point, but I can’t seem to find ANYTHING that would work. I know that I would like to place it on the other side of the refrigerator, opposite wall from the couch. There is a good amount of space for a small table and 2 chairs. I know that I would also like for it to be bar/counter height. I like the feeling of sitting a bit higher than the couch, which would be directly across from the table. It gives me a sense of separation from that part of the room.
I have searched high and low, on the internet and by foot. I can’t seem to find anything that doesn’t look too shiny, too big, too thin, plastic and wobbly, too expensive, or likely to topple over from someone leaning on it. I’ve even considered building my own table but I don’t have the means. All I am looking for is a tall, sturdy, small table, preferably all wood and nothing fancy. Any suggestions or ideas on where I should be looking?
Anyone have any suggestions for a "rustic wood bar table" that fits Haley's style? We're not normally looking for "rustic" items, but think maybe this Macon Small Spaces Table & Chair Set may fit the bill, in size, style and affordability.

Wasnt there a post a few months ago about some machine-shop bases - the idea being that they would make great table bases?
I'd hit the fleamarkets looking for something like that - and get a simple 36" round wood tabletop from the local home improvement store - put the two together and there's a cool table. As for chairs - again, I'd hit the fleamarkets and put your talents to use painting and/or reupholstering the seats.

hmmm.... when i think of rustic i think of many different styles- rustic-modern, traditional rustic, rustic cabin etc. so i don't really know what your going for...

I would check craigslist's free section in your area. You would be amazed at what people part with. Also, be creative. I once saw an old door propped on two saw horses for a really rustic dining table.

Would an antique drop-leaf table work? They're sturdy, super space efficient, and expandable -- and surprisingly affordable, since 19th century antiques are out of fashion.

I have a pretty small Ikea table (Norbo) that mounts on the wall that works really well in my studio. That way you can mount it at whatever height you would like.
