Good Questions: Stylish Laptop Desk

laptop.jpgHello AT,
I've been bugging everyone I know for a cool-looking lap-desk that: a) doesn't look like it's from PB Kids or the Sanrio store; b) isn't the crappy nerd-tech you find in the SkyMall catalog. No one's been able to suggest something cool and stylish. Help!

Well, it turns out that Enrique ended up answering his own question! Thanks to a recent Productdose post, he found the Reform Bedworks bamboo laptop platform ($198).

Enrique says "This is the perfect piece for me. Even at the higher price-point, it's the kind of bourgie "statement" piece I love."

We're sorry we weren't able to help Enrique's mission sooner, but it did get us looking for additional ideas to a more "stylish" laptop desk solution:

Velocity has this birch laptop tray from Offi ($99)

Which got us thinking, you could probably also just use a normal bed tray, such as this one from CB2 ($29)

And finally, this month's Readymade featured a DIY version of a "laptop trolley",

which reminded us of to the MALM table from IKEA ($69).

If any of you have any other suggestions, please share!

Enrique,

Funny you should bring this up. I was just thinking about it last night. I want a table that looks like one of these but with a swivel so I can push the top out of the way when not in use. I don't want to have to move the entire table, just the top. Where am I going to find one of those?

i was thinking if you don't want it to look like it's for a laptop, don't buy a computer desk. try a breakfast in bed desk or maybe a stylish makeup desk/dressing table.

anne, if your lap top is a small one, you might want to look at the eileen grey table or one of the knockoffs. just a warning though, it's round.

LOL. Oy, there's sure a lot of fugly stuff out there... Nice to know that everyone can come together and find some stylish solutions (like the ones above) that don't scream either: "Excuse me, yeah, I believe you have my stapler?" or "OMG! I *heart* U! BFF!" I thank you. My lower back thanks you. My tense shoulder muscles thank you. Etc.

Enrique,

I had the same problem for both of my apartments. here is how I solved it. I wanted something to be on the floor though.

I have a herman miller scooter from levenger in oak (no longer made) but you can get them in other woods. I like it but sometimes the height mechanism is not the most reliable. The scooter does tilt and you are meant to wrap your legs/feet around it while you sit.
Just go to levenger.com and search on scooter.

I also bought this on ebay.

It is height adjustable and tilts completely. It reminds me of a danish modern music stand but much thicker.

I had luck finding it by searching for modern tray on ebay.

I really wanted a george nelson tray table but Herman Miller stopped making the reissue, but vitra still makes them in Europe.

i've been using the iLap. it's fairly unobtrusive, very comfortable in my lap & is good at keeping my macbook pro cool. the screen is still a bit too low & i find myself slouching after a while, so i'm now in search of a small, adjustable desk that sits on the floor. the two that i'm considering are the air desk & the laptop desk from bed bath & beyond. has anyone seen these in real life?

airdesk
anne, this seems to be close to what you described
