Good Questions: Togo Sofa Option?
Los Angeles

030909atlagoodquest2-1.jpgHelp Adam with his search for a sofa:
I'm hoping someone in the AT community can help me find an affordable solution for a high end wish. I'm looking for a high quality seating option that looks like the Ligne Roset Togo sofa. While I'd obviously love an original, I simply can't afford the price tag...

Got a good question you'd like answered? Send your queries and a photo or two illustrating your question, and we'll see if the ATLA team or our readers can help you out.

030909atlagoodquest2-2.jpgThe most prevalent reproduction out there seems to be the Downlow sofa made by Alphaville. Does anyone have this sofa? What do they think?

030909atlagoodquest2-3.jpgThe other sofa I'm considering is the Looks sofa made by Elite Design Furniture. While I've heard a good recommendation from someone who owns this sofa, I think its form departs too much from the original Togo.

Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Adam--

There are some things in life - like Herman Miller's Eames Lounge Chair, Levi's Jeans, Porsche's 911, springtime in Paris and diving off the Great Barrier Reef - where there is no substitute for the real thing.

Either save until you can afford the real Togo or buy pre-owned: but you'll never be satisfied with a cheap knockoff.

I've actually found these to not be very comfortable. Too low to the ground, and not great back support. I like the look of them though, and would second the other suggestions of trying to find them slightly used. Ligne Roset has sample sales twice per year, you might try that also - I believe they have a mailing list that you can sign up for.

Expensive as it is, I wouldn't place the Togo sofa in the same category as springtime in Paris or the Eames lounge - some pieces are just damn overpriced for no good reason. If one of the alternatives is of decent quality and comfortable, why not go for it? Not everyone is looking for a piece of furniture to bequeath to their grandchildren.

A while back I saw a complete Togo knock-off on a sofa site. The name of the company escapes me but I found it in a list of sofa sites on AT.

Hey! --

we've owned a Togo since 1989, and the reason we replaced ours is precisely because it *IS* so very comfortable that we couldn't live without it! It is the most comfortable furniture for being a couch potato, snuggling, reading... although I will allow that it is not great for pregnant women and people with bad knees.

And in the current issue of French Elle Decoration, the Togo *is* in the same timeless category as Eames, Saarinen, the Navy chair, etc.

Ligne Roset has sales once or twice a year, and that is when to buy. We bought our first Togo as impoverished grad students -- I had been setting money aside for a long time specifically to buy a Togo (I fell in love with Togo when I was about 8 or 9).

I write this post comfortable ensconced on my Togo...

I would look for someone that is selling a used one on ebay or craigslist. Just be patient and one will come along.

That looks like something you'd find in a dorm room.

We just got our Togo loveseat and ottoman---in Aubergine microsuede---delivered a few weeks ago and couldn't be happier. I'd been in love with the design for years and finally splurged. We find it's very comfortable, cozy, and beautiful.

Not a fan of this, i hope nobody would pay for the expensive one. It looks sloppy, unsupportive and too low to the ground... those kinds of sofas are so hard to get out of!

I agree with the other readers: save for the real thing. I bought our Togo 2 years ago and we are very happy with it. I wouldn't place this sofa with anything else! Just buy one on craiglist, ebay or save for a new one.

Hey!
My boyfriend has a Ligne Roset Togo sectional in Royal Blue. We are moving in together soon and we don't have room for all of it. We are selling the 3 seater couch and corner chair. It is 2 years old and like new. Only problem is we live in Pennsylvania. Maybe we could ship. Let me know if you are interested. jesibel777@aol.com

Whatever you do don't go for a knock-off, you'll only regret it. Either see if you can get one used on CL/Ebay or save up another year for a new one. Buy a $200 Ikea sofa to tide you over.

I was lucky enough to inherit 2 very early Togos (late 70s) in brown and even though they are tatty now, there's no way I'd part with them. And everybody who comes to my place plonks themselves straight into the Togos even though I have lots of other nice chairs. We call them the Alfs... in brown they look like the nose of the TV alien of yesteryear :-)

I would not settle for anything other than an original Togo from Lignet Roset. I started with a pre owned grey velor 2 seater and three seater from the 1980's I sold these about a year later doubling my money went on to purchase another pre owned in orange velor. I sold this making a small profit (£100ish) I now have a Black leather set that I am selling to fund my next Togo which will be a colored leather one.
I am in the UK so not relevant to you but here is a link to my Set http://www.groovycart.co.uk/cart.php?c=46&p=1652

I would thoroughly recommend the Togo it is so comfortable. Maybe not suitable for anyone with mobility problems and older people may have problems getting up as it is rather low.
