apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Good Questions: What do you think of these pieces?

AT:LA reader Kelly needs some opinions:

I am going to check out this bedroom set tomorrow. Besides the headboard not looking like it matches the set what else should I look for before purchasing it for $250 OBO. Also, what do you all think of the price?

Hi Kelly, generally, we feel that four pieces for $250 seems like a reasonable deal (of course, it wouldn't hurt to try for lower?). Out of the four, we can see great potential for the long dresser and the smaller one, but not sure what you'd do with the corner one and the mismatched headboard. Although maybe if you refinished or painted the corner desk, it could be interesting if you have a space for it. Definitely check the drawers, see if they open or close easily, and if it's stable or if the legs are rickety. The dresser looks like it could use a little sprucing, but it looks like it could clean up quite well. A vintage dresser like that could go for at least $500 alone. What do you guys think? What advice would you give for Kelly?

I love the 2 dressers. You can't beat that danish modern shape. The headboard looks like it could be a hassle to make work, but you'll know when you're in front of it.

I would make sure that the wood is not water damaged or separating at the seams (from being stored in a damp place). I've had it happen to my own stuff which is why I mention it. I would offer $175 for everything but the headboard, or $200 for the whole lot. That's me though, I love bargaining.

I'd pass on the headboard, but the other pieces definitely show potential. And as others have said, the price isn't bad but always, always bargain with the seller, because you never know!

i agree with laure & jonathan. i'd check if the stuff's in good physical shape & then call my refinisher to have him pick it up for me & refinish them (sand/stain/seal). i'd break up the pieces though and use just the headboard & the long dresser in the bedroom. that piece to the right might make a great landing strip. with a cushion made for the top of the lower portion it'd be a great place to put on/take off shoes. and that corner piece might find a spot in a bathroom, a dining room or living room.

Okay guys, I really love Apartment Therapy for this reason.

I too wondered what the deal was w/ the headboard and thought about offering the same as what Laure said. I just needed to bounce ideas off of people who love this stuff like I do. So a big THANK YOU for your input!

There were some major top surface scratches, but not deep. I gave it a shot and offered $150 for the three pieces, minus the headboard. I Ended up paying $175 for the three and they are in the bedroom now. I love them!
