Good Questions: What to Do With Keys?

010707_keyholder.jpg

[ Photo from Charles and Marie ]

AT:LA reader Nick writes: I would like to hang my keys near the door and don't have the option of placing them in a bowl or something similar since there's no room for a console table.

But most of the hooks or holders that I've seen that are specifically designed to hold keys are novelty-themed (mostly animals). This really isn't my style.

Can you or any of your readers possibly direct me to some modern styles? Or will I have to resort to just plain hooks?

And for the readers - how do you hang or hold your keys?

Dear Nick,

We love this super sleek keyholder from Charles and Marie called the Marvelous Key Rack. It's a simple piece of natural oil-treated oak with a slot in the middle that will hold your keys in place. Mount it on the wall near your door, and you can even use it as a handy shelf to hold outgoing mail or even your wallet. If you're into more kitschy goods, there's the His n' Her keyholder at Perpetual Kid.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

Blomus has a lot of nice stainless steel key holders. We have this one, http://tinyurl.com/2s5gmq and I really like it.

How does the Charles and Marie keyholder mount to the wall? Is it adhesive or actual hardware? There aren't any details on the site.

These are another option...
http://www.tinyliving.com/store/product/642/large-magnetic-spot-hook/
I think they make them in non-magnetic, too.

You could also just get some of those, I think they're called "cup hooks"--essentially little hooks, so they'd be unobtrusive. If you're into DIY, you could screw a few of these into a plain painted block of wood (or something else fittingly modern) and make a key holder.

Oh, and since you asked, I hang my keys on a very non-modern key holder! Brass shaped like a teapot! :)

licnell,
if you look at the charles and marie keyholder closely you'll see that at two points along the slot there is a circle drilled out. the screw goes through this circle and into the wall.

Nick, You're absolutely right about key holders having animal motifs. When I moved into my loft it had two key holders already on the wall: one of dogs, one of cows. I've also seen kitties and rabbits in my search for a better hook system. I'm about to go with Shaker pegs (though lemonpie definitely has a point.)

I bought something similar in silver from The Container Store a few years ago for $20 (key holder, mail slot, pic frame)

Just a thought: every time I look at wall mounted key holders I think about what will happen when I inevitably walk into them accidentally. Don't get anything too spiky.

A long time ago I had my kids paint a wooden board with a design (whatever they wanted) and then hammer nails partway into it. We hung it up to hold keys.

I have a long, skinny hallway, with no room for a table. I use this:

It has a groove on top for mail or art, and the hooks will hold other things besides keys.

I have a white narrow shelf from Pottery Barn, it's only 3" deep and length they come different sizes. I painted it the color of the wall and placed on it same depth bamboo boxes from Container Store - which actually where originally designed to be drawer organizers, but I adopted them for different purpose. I love it because the bamboo boxes look like they float and they hold keys, phones, sunglasses and wallets and it cost a fraction of the more elaborate designs. If you are clumsy this option won't be for you. :-)

i keep my keys hanging on the deadbolt handle. Since I live by myself, if i'm touching the deadbolt that means i'm leaving or coming home - so really, it's the perfect reminder and closest location.

I have a small chrome hook from Osh (you can get them at any hardware store) it's actually pretty nice. I believe it was origionally for the bathroom but it works great in the little 4" wide spot between my door and front window. Not to mention you can stack two or three of them on top of eachother to have more space. Try this one ... Lowes hooks

if you would like a more bowl-like receptacle you could try hanging one or two of the below on something like jenc mentioned.

Plug a few of these knobs on the wall turned upside down and they are perfect for hanging keys. The groove keeps keys or anything else from going anywhere. Pluse they are cheap and stylish.
