Good Questions: Where to Find Mounted Fish?
Los Angeles

021709Kellyvanpatter162.jpgDear Apartment Therapy, I have been searching forever for a tuna like the one in the picture from Kelly's Craftsman Comfort house tour. Where should I look to find one similar and are they all usually fiberglass? -Bruce

Got a good question you'd like answered? Send your queries and a photo or two illustrating your question, and we'll see if the ATLA team or our readers can help you out.

Bruce, these are indeed fiberglass replicas. You can get some faux trophies like Kelly bathroom collection online from a selection of 81 species here.

The real taxidermy ones are super expensive on ebay. But you can find the fake ones for pretty cheap. I actually was just looking for a bright blue sail fish, but my bf quickly vetoed that idea...
As usual, check thrift shops and flea markets, and definitely estate sales.

Regardless, when you find one, and have it placed as you have been dreaming of, would you please send the editors a photo to post? I'm really curious to see what you do with it.

I would not suggesting get a plastic fish (or talking bass) from Cabelas or a similar store. Particularly with a larger model such as a tuna it's going to look very cheap.
(The larger fish in the photo accompanying the question is actually a California yellowtail (similar to hamachi - Japanese yellowtail). If you like the look of the yellowtail, you'd probably also like the size/shape/color of rainbow runners or dorado (dolphin fish or mahi mahi).)

Virtually all taxidermist now use custom molds and cast/airbrush their fish based on a photograph or measurements. This means that you can call virtually any reputable taxidermist that deals with ocean fish and order a specific fish in a specific size. It can be pricey -- $10-$12 per inch -- but that's probably something that can be bargained in the current economy. They may even have fish that were ordered but never picked up. If you want a yellowtail, I'd probably look at taxidermist in Southern California as they do alot of yellowtail. For dorado or yellowfin tuna, taxidermist in California or Florida should have plenty of options.

As for the person who questioned why, it's probably because there is a diversity of tastes and not everyone wants their space looking like their neighbors. I suggest checking out the taxidermy sculptures installed in the newer sections of the Miami Airport for inspiration.

I mounted a can of Bumble Bee Tuna to my wall. It's the same thing.

Seriously, get a swordfish or do without!
