Good Questions: Where to Find Petite Hangers?

092308sad_closet.jpgAT reader Jen writes in with this closet organization question we're hoping someone out there might have experience with:

"Where can I find inexpensive 14" hangers? I'm running out of hangers in my closet and I figure if I'm gonna get new ones, I might as well try to create some order. The tubular children's hangers at Target are too small. Regular size hangers are too big. I'm pretty sure 14" would be just the right size for my tops. Wood would be nice, but I'm open to slim flocked, metal, plastic... anything for a decent price."

Jen, the 14" sized hangers are often described as "teen size", and if cost is the primary issue, plastic is probably the cheapest way to go. A set of 100 14" plastic hangers will cost just $32, but we're sad to say the styling of the hangers themselves will likely make your closet look like a retail discounter rather than a personal closet. Very slim form metal hangers will set you back around $89, while curved wood hangers are about $120 for a box of 100.

i just bought a ton of the slim flocked hangers at bedbathbeyond. replacing my big plastic and wood ones with the slim ones quadrupled the amount of clothes i can hang in my closet. srsly.

I've been looking for smaller hangers as well, so thank you for the links! I found some at my local Daiso (Japanese dollar store), but they don't consistently stock them. I also managed to buy some nice wooden ones from a children's/teen clothing store that was closing.

kdkaboom - I think I know which flocked ones you're taking about, but I don't think they're only 14" wide?

My friend's parents own a drycleaner business - their solution is to bend the wire hangers to the right size. My solution is to drape my shirts over the hanger's bar.

I have had a similar need, since I'm pretty petite. I found some great ones in the kids department at Ikea. They're brightly colored (for better or worse), but are the perfect size for my tops, and don't stretch out the shoulders.

The container store has kiddie hangers. I think they are around 13 inches long.

I just dealt with this on my blog, in reply to a comment when I wrote about hangers. Here are two options:

Teen/Tot 14" Dress/Shirt Hangers

14 inch hangers available in metal, plastic, and wooden options.

Ikea has wooden hangers for kids closets that seem like they would work.

Bed bath and beyond sells the slim flocked hangers that work great and they have a 50 pack for 39 bucks and if you get one of their coupons for 10$ off if you spend 30 or more you can get them for 30! They really save some serious space. Ikea has the wood ones for cheap but because most of the wood hangars have that curve in them they take up a ton of room.

I've been checking the stores (flocked are all too large I found) and some on-line stores in search of the same thing - hangers that don't stretch out tops but yet not kid sized. Muji has some smaller ones. Try Beverlyhangers.com - they have some nice wooden ones sized at 15 inch.

Thanks to everyone who replied (and actually bothered to talk about hangers with a narrower shoulder width... *cough*). Because I'm not made of money (yet), I decided to go with the candy-colored IKEA Bagis hangers. After I bought them, I realized that 15" hangers would probably be the perfect size, but these will do until I can afford to spend hundreds of dollars on hangers. I'm working to at least replace all my hangers with the IKEA ones so it'll look uniform. Thanks for your input, AT!
