Good Questions: Where's A Good Place On The Westside To Shop For A Platform Bed?
Los Angeles

[ATLA reader, M, is looking for a bed like Room & Board's Perspective bed.]

One of our Apartment Therapy readers sent us a question about where to find an affordable platform bed on the Westside of Los Angeles (Santa Monica, Venice, Mar Vista, West LA, Marina Del Rey, etc). Let's help her out.

"I just moved to LA from Chicago and am wondering where people shop for beds?! I'd really like to get a new platform bed, but am having problems finding local places. I'm used to having CB2 and Room and Board all around me. So I guess the question is, where's a good place to shop on the Westside for a relatively inexpensive ($500) platform bed?"

Oooh, I'd like to know too! I need a platform bed, I like the style (and price!) of the West Elm platform beds, but I've heard that their quality is sub-pare (worse than Ikea?).

I've also noticed that lots of people seem to really REALLY like the Ikea Malm bed... but I'd also like to hear any negative reviews on it too. I'm really nervous about dropping $100s on a bed and then having it break. :/

First off M, welcome to LA!

There is an Ikea in Culver City I believe. Also, there is a West Elm on 4th street in Santa Monica. Take a look at their website, their bed frames are inexpensive.

As far as sparkle's concern about the Malm, I've had mine for four years - it is a great bed. No problems with it at all, quality is excellent.

Adding: it may be worth it to do the old La Brea crawl or look in Korea town. Lots of modern looking furniture, not bad prices.

valleyval, there's no Ikea in Culver City. There's one in Burbank and one in Carson. I think they're pretty much the same distance from the westside, but I know my friends on the westside prefer going to Carson.

And thanks for your input about the Malm, valleyval!

Yep, No Ikea in Culver City.

You could try Pomp though, they are there. Bo, DWR, Knoll and West elm on the 3rd st prominade. Going to have to go to OC for R B or wait a couple years. I second the La Brea comment.

I can third-confirm there's no Ikea in Culver City. :-(

Since we are talking about the Westside, I'd hit Craigslist first off and see who's selling what - R&B is on there A LOT.

I got a great platform bed on overstock.com. worth a look.

I second all of the comments above and have a few more thoughts to throw in. I'd check out Macy's--the Westside Pavillion location (Westwood and Pico) has a good selection of furniture at reasonable prices (and you can preview things online), although I'm not sure how many platform beds they have. I'd also check out the Helms Bakery area (near Venice and Robertson, just east of Culver City). Neither one of these places will be as cheap as Ikea or West Elm, but you never know what you'll find on sale.

And welcome to LA!

Blueprint on Beverly Blvd. just east of the Beverly Center is a low/midpriced LA institution that has been around for 15 or more years. It is kind of an uncoordinated mess in there, but if you can look past the disorganized nature of the place, you might find what you are looking for.

Another way to go might be to buy a platform base from West Elm or CB2 or Craigslist and have a place like Viesso in Santa Monica make a wall mounted headboard in your choice of color/fabric.

The Sofa Company in Santa Monica has an inexpensive upholstered platform bed. You can pick the fabric.
