apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Hang in there, Not Martha!

Megan of Not Martha posts about her hangups about trying to find the perfect height to hang her new CB2 wall mirror [note: we love her orange walls]. She's already considered Apartment Therapy's advice to hang all pictures at 57" on center, "gallery height", and also has taken the advice of a reader by mocking up a paper model of the mirror onto the wall for visual reference (fantastic idea), but we understand her trepidation to commit to a specific height. Sometimes good advice isn't necessarily the right advice for your specific situation.

We ran into a similar dilemma awhile ago when we were placing a decorative mirror over a stereo cabinet. We hung our mirror much lower than the recommended gallery height because opposite of the mirror was our seating, and actual eye level would be at this height instead of from a standing position. And in Megan's case, we think 57" might be a tad too high next to the horizontal presence of the buffet. What do you all think?

megan: i think hanging the mirror low would look great. maybe scale it by taking a favorite object that you'd like to put on the bureau, and decide whether you'd like to see the object's reflection in the mirror, or whether you'd like the mirror to clear the objects that you display.

(i guess even Not Martha can sometimes take a tip from Martha! the idea of the paper mock-up is a "Good Thing" from MS Living.) :)

The mirror definitely needs to be lower.
