LA Good Question: Fix This Leather Sink Hole?

070208_sink.jpgI have a set of four padded leather chairs and have noticed that they are starting to develop ripples emanating from the "point of impact." Specifically, the daily application of a heavy roundish object seems to be both compressing the padding and stretching the leather of the chairs, creating a sink hole that threatens their otherwise clean lines. Is there anything I can do to minimize this development? As you can see in the picture, this has just started but I remember having a leather couch ten years ago that became horribly distorted. FYI, the chairs are of very high quality and the roundish object is typical of the genre.

Thanks,
flavorpacket

Hmm, Flavorpacket, you can't be the first person to encounter this problem, could it be that this is the natural evolution of a leather chair and should be embraced? Readers! Knowers! Leather aficionados! To the rescue!

This is one of my favorite aspects of leather, especially with modern pieces. I admit, that in the picture the chair does look a little unusual but I also think that it will only develop with age. It's like a haircut, going from short to longer is sometimes a little sloppy but the look is fantastic on either end.

designate the chair for people with flatter roundish objects perhaps?

Maybe it's the foam? Does the cover zipper off? could slip a thin sheet of faom in on toop to fill it out more?

It's all part of the deal with leather. Accept that your chair, like many other things, is going to age. Most leather will age gracefully if treated well, and the little scuffs, ripples, and marks will make a lovely patina over time.

This is the beauty of natural materials. Real leather will stretch over time and even change color as it absorbs oils from your skin. For me, cracks or sun damage lessens the beauty of leather, but not these "comfort wrinkles" your chairs are developing. If you are really set on a sleek look, I would swap the chairs for something without a cushion. The other option is to stop sitting on them.

I think you should just keep breaking them in!

Leather is like human skin, it will stretch and wrinkle as it aged. I don't think there is anything you can do about it since Botox has no effect on leather.

Perhaps you can get it quilted/tufted, so it will give chair
a new look or you can always reupholster with new leather every 2-3yrs.

Leather is like human skin as in it is skin. It is animal skin. So it's going to stretch just like human skin would. That is why I like plether. It looks like leather, it maintains it's shape, and you aren't sitting on skin.
